newbie, help id with fin box system

Hi all, I am not a shaper, but a surfer for many years living in HI. I came across an unfinished surfboard and would like to finish it up as a fun project. It’s a mini tanker of about 8’. From my (limited) research, it looks like it will need a final ‘hot coat’ and most likely a longboard finbox installed. I assume this is what the shaper was thinking. I am looking at the side boxes, they say “s” on them. I can’t ID them as futures as most of futures are X for center and F for sides. What type of fin box is this? Also, will the proper steps be 1) sand down 2) hot coat 3) install longboard center fin box? I do have a friend who is a backyard shaper and will ask him when he has time to help me, but thought I’d try to do searching first.

Thanks. I also picked up a quad fish. It’s a traditional fish at 5’9 x 20.5. What do you think you would recommend for a woman (120 lbs)? I ride mostly shortboards, mini tankers and all thrusters. Usually ride small templete fcs fins, don’t mind medium fins, but wide tails have always felt weird to me. This is my first try at quads. Large front, and small trailers? Thanks a bunch. aloha, j

You’re right about that unfinished board. It seems like it has been laminated, so theres at least one more coat of resin to follow up. If it is not a distortion or anything, there are some major air bubbles in the lap though. I am only at board 4 right now, but I think you’d wanna get rid of those before hotcoating.

As for the fins, I don’t know much about quad fishes as I prefer twins. What I’d suggest is, just try as many as you can, borrow from friends etc.

thanks for the reply. Yes that is the largest air bubble you see. Can you identify that box, is that a standard future box?
