Looking to start shaping my own boards as I can't afford to pay for new boards everytime I snap one, still pretty young. Had a couple questions for anyone, was looking at trying to shape the Lost Motivator and I was wondering how hard that would be to shape? Or if there is a similiar wide outlined flat decked board that would perform well in SC flat waves, not sure which board to start with. Also, should I start with a fish type blank or a high performance blank? The nose/tail is pretty wide and not a lot of rocker. Any advice especially on any certain ways to do things or any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

Its a lot to learn, but most all of it is layed out here on this forum.  My advice? - Look up past threads, search the archives, and read, read, read.  Its free!  Pick your shape, get your blank, post some pics, and you're on your way - a lifetime addiction!

Welcome to Swaylocks.

Howzit LexSC, First let me welcome you to Swaylocks, the number 1 website for building surfboards. Like Huck said it is all in the archives and you will probably be over whelmed when you see all the info but every step hs been discussed more than a few times and the whole process is there. Trying to tell you in a post would take a long time and a lot of page space so please check the archives and then if there are things you can't comprehend then start a thead and ask the questions you have. Aloha,Kokua

Thank you guys, I've been pretty interested in shaping boards and somehow I always come back to this site for any information or questions...I'll definately be checking in and reading up on your guy's past forums.

Howzit LexSC, That's the way, now get ready for a brain overload and keep apen and paper nearby, Aloha,Kokua

somebody  will ride

your first board better than

you will be able to ride it.

Listen to Ambrose, Sage advice. Make what turns you on, the shape you see in your head. You can always turn to copies later. The advantage is, once you have a couple under your belt, you can take a shape and tailor any board to your style.

For a first shape, and that ''type'' of board; use a shortboard blank 6''-8'' longer than intended board length and center the outline on the blank (that way you'll lose a little of the nose and tail flip but still yield a rocker that will do something when you put it on rail). What brand/type of blanks are you considering?

I think the best thing to do is immediately bookmark a page you find useful. Then later organize your links.

I have spent so much time looking for stuff I saw but forgot what the name of the thread was. Now I bookmark the pages I like.
