I would like any information about going to Nicaragua to surf but not staying at the luxury of the surfcamps. Is there camping or staying on with locals at nearby breaks?, and where do the waves go off!

The main surfing hub is San Juan Del Sur, down on the south west end. With a light tent you can camp at Playa Maderas, right at the break. Check out the Nicaragua Surf Report, (NSR.com), Heading farther North there should be cheap spots at Gigante and Popoyo.

Not a lot of English spoken in country, so at least basic spanish pretty much a must.
