Nice article in the new 'Surfing' mag....

WOW! A guy jumping off of a pickup-truck onto a surfboard, and the board springing back into position! This seems like a dream (or a dream come true?) Don’t get me wrong, nothing will beat a poly board shaped for me, but I might have to put one of these boards into my quiver! I’m not a pro or near-pro surfer by any means, probably intermediate at best. I know any adverse characteristics a board like this may or may-not have would probably go by unnoticed to someone like me. Greg, you’re located in FL right? I think I may have even seen indialantic or IRB? Do you guys, or will you guys, have any demo boards for a ride-before-you-buy type scenario? I would definitely be interested in having a back up ‘indestructible’ board in my quiver! Sorry if the post rambles on, I’m a surfing/design n00b compared to most of you all, and I was just so excited to see something like this come to reality!

Matt

How do you know nothing will beat a poly board for you? Until you’ve tried something new to you, you will never know.

So I hope you can get a chance to try one out.

I totally agree with your comment that this type of board should be be available for pre-buying test rides. By all rights it should handle the abuse, especially if it’s all the manufacturers claim it is.

what I meant was a poly board hand shaped for me and my surfing abilities (or lack thereof!) and talking to a shaper and all that. The waiting and finally seeing the end product.

Back in 1995 when I invented the parallel profile multi directional balsa laminate FLEXIBLE surfboard construction system, I was filmed at Manu Bay Raglan jumping up and down on top of one of my VERY FLEXIBLE 7 footers while wearing steel capped boots, we also drove up one of my 12 foot balsa boards with a Dodge truck (using the board as a ramp)

Of course no one in the surfing industry thought we were anything other than crackpots, and I wrote article after article for surfing magazines on the benefits of flexibility, all of which were completely ignored.

My guess is that I should have changed my name to French Fries.

It’s all image after all !

(Aloha gents, Bert included, just spitting the dummy slightly)

SurferBoy, nothing against you… but this just goes to show that the world needs a good educating… eps/epoxy does not mean surftech/molded. These boards can (and many already are) be custom hand shaped for you and your surfing abilities.

Times are a changing. It seems to me that it might be time to wipe the dust off those old articles of yours and re-submit them for publication. The world, i.e. the Surf Press, maybe more open minded now, at least for a while.

none taken. As I said, when it comes to surfboard design I’m not anywhere near knowledgable. I just thought this particular board pictured seemed like, and was described to be, a ‘surftech/molded’ surfboard. They said it was made by ‘vacuum-formed sandwhich construction.’ This is a surftech, no? Or is it possible to (hand?)‘shape’ one of these? I’m here to learn!

Ah, that is the misconception. I have not seen the article, as I don’t read the surf propoganda mags often. The majority of the boards described as “vacuum-formed sandwhich construction” are surftechs, but not limmitted to them. Many people here, and more by the day it seems, are doing custom handshaped vacuum-formed sandwhich construction boards.

Bert and CMP are doing them professionally. While folks like MrJ, Meecraty, Sabs, Silly, DanB, Benny1 and many others I can’t think of off hand are doing them for their personally boards. Bert has a very long detailed thread “Vacuum Forming and Sandwich Construction” http://www.swaylocks.com/forum/gforum.cgi?post=183391#183391, which in many ways jump started much of the custom sandwiches you see here. Mostly they are balsa skinned sandwiches but there are a lot of others here as well.

Damn what a good read! That’s awesome! Lighter than any pro’s board yet multiplying board life by 5 to 10x!! And he said that’s worse than what he’s doing now!!

Welcome to the world almost according to Bert, and I’m glad people thank him for what he has shared here.

He and others have also opened a few eyes to the wonders of adapting technology to suit personal preference, which is what a lot of people here are doing very sucessfully.

Do you feel the urge coming Surferboy? Have some fun and make yourself a board.

Ha! I would totally demolish something trying to make a board how he does with all those things needed for the rocker, concaves, etc. Haven’t even tried to shape a normal poly board yet! I’m about to make the transition to dorm/college life but a guy who shapes will be within a half hour so I might go shadow and try my hand at shaping one and have him guide me! I would love to make my own board!
