Considering that most that post here have considerable quivers, are craftsmen, and care for their equiptment, how do you store your boards? Any plans for stoarge systems, racks. I have a small garage and after the surfmobile and my other stuff, there’s not too much room for my boards. Or, maybe I should just park on the street.
Trip: Assuming you have the ceiling height, take a 2x4, some EMT (elect.conduit, or PVC cut to 18" or so and drill holes equal to the O.D. of your tubing along the 2x4. Hammer the tubing into the spaced holes and mount the whole thing on the wall studs horizontally. Lay down a piece of old carpet on the floor below the rack and now you’ve got miles of upright storage with easy access to your quiver. For the boards I use most, I made racks to store them horizontally on the garage wall. These use 2x4s solidly bolted to the walls; the 2x4s are drilled at an angle approx. 10 degrees above horizontal for dowels about 28" long and 1" in diameter, placed about every 10 inches or so vertically. (Sorry I don’t recall the exact dimensions, I made them a while ago). The dowels are glued in and then padded with pipe insulation 1" longer than the dowel, held on with velcro straps, just tight enough that the pads still rotate. This keeps the boards from getting dinged and allows boards to be rolled on or off the end of the racks, which is easier for the big boards and racks higher on the wall (mine are about 11 feet tall). Short boards fit 2 to a rack, longboards with big fins take up one by themselves. I also store less frequently used boards in the (padded) rafters and by rope loops hung from the rafters, and a couple stacked vertically in a corner on some foam rubber. I have bike hooks on another wall which work well for boards in board bags (2 hooks a couple feet apart hold the shoulder straps). The rest of the boards I leave in friends/relatives garages!! Of all these methods I prefer the horizontal racks the best (although I need to build more of them …)
