Yeah, it’s a nice shot but perhaps there should be a separate Photo Discussion section for this flood of photos. Yes Chip, you did ask for opinions before posting/flooding the photos, but I don’t think anyone knew the extent of your archives.
Why not a different section for photos that do not directly illustrate a design or construction theory/question?
We all like photos and appreciate the ability to post them.
Any other opinions?
Those who take photos share them…it would be boring here and elsewhere if it was just all talk. So, get used to it.
If you don’t like my photos , then don’t look at them, or go to surfer […because I’m not there, you won’t have to ‘put up’ with my photos, you poor dear, you ! ]
Meanwhile, for all the other people here who enjoy my shots [ and there are PLENTY who do !] , the photos will definately continue !
Actually, YOU used to post some good shots at ‘Surfer’, Rob … why did you stop ?
Did the spoilt children there, complaining about ‘too many photos’ [??!!] put you off, too ?
I’d LOVE to see you post more shots here at swaylocks, mate…I’ve always enjoyed the shots you posted at surfer…[that’s WHY I posted the “photos…keep 'em coming” thread…for EVERYONE to contribute !]

“those who can , DO…those who can’t / don’t want to, criticise …”
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then I’d rather look at pictures. I’m not really into noise pollution.
Discussion will interpret the same pictures a thousand different ways, giving us all an insight into other peoples minds. I’m into learning something from everyone.
There was a discussion here once on a video file of someone riding an old style fish. Comments were made of speed, turning etc, and all I saw was rails catching.
It’s all personal opinion. Keep everything coming, comment and pics, anything as long as it’s surf related and constructive.
Sure pics are nice. They are nicer if they related to shaping. You could argue that any image of a surfing can be related to desing theory, but that argument is weak at best. If images such as this inspire design theory then where is the design theory?

Chip- I see no reason to keep starting new threads every time you post a new random picture. Why can’t you just post them all to one particular thread: Chip’s photo thread. That way you don’t make others nervous and start drawing parallels between you and other ex-swaylocks posters. The problem I see is that your barrage of threads bumps other threads, ones that are probably more relevent to the topic (surboard design and construction) down the list- to the next page, which fewer people read. -Carl
Those are good points. Posting photos related to design or construction often help illustrate a concept or idea. Those types of photos are useful.
Photos of the coolest shark encounter or the latest image with a surfboard visible do not directly contribute to Swaylocks. Do that a few times a day and it gets messy.
Any moderators have an opinion?
“Any moderators have an opinion?”
Doesn’t EVERYBODY have an opinion on Swaylocks? Ha Ha!
My take, and I’m only one of several moderators, is that photos, links, etc (in good taste of course but please don’t ask me to define “good taste”) are all within the Forum Rules set up by Mike Paler.
Under the Forum Rules section are some general guidelines regarding things that will make you popular/unpopular, etc.
If I started receiving complaints about the content or tone of my posts (and believe me I have), I might consider rethinking my approach rather than getting into a personal tit-for-tat that invariably ends up going down hill fast.
Sorry 'bout that shark photo, Rob!
I kind of like the idea of a photo gallery.
Maybe Mr. Paler would consider setting aside a separate area so that those with lots of photos can post to their heart’s content.
Could even be divided down into board shots, fin shots, favorite waves, tool photos, etc etc??
I was not sure who’s reply to hang off of, but I agree with the general tone of the thread. I come to Swaylocks to learn and contribute about design and see the boards people have made. But pictures for the sake of pictures… that is what the surfing magazines are for (and I don’t see a need to read those unless I have time to burn in the mag section of a store).
These endless photo threads eat up space on the server (increasing the cost of maintaining SWAYLOCKS), and bump threads more closely aligned with the goals of the sight.
I’m all for minimizing the rules and avoiding legalistic membership, but at the same time bombardment is another thing.
just another opinion
Nice pic…but i think that photographer went over the falls right after taking that picture.
I enjoy the shots Chip, but the others do have a point. Mabybe like the guy suggested one thread continually running would be cool for those nostalgic photos. DR
I agree that Chip could (self)moderate the spamming of magazine shots. pretty please
“…this photograph is proof positive that rounded pins are the best tail for the tube…”
Y’all happy now???
I think this is just like a team that decides they don’t need the most inspirational player any more. We can do it now championship team go, rah-rah. Hit the showers Chip, Bert’s in at QB.
Old Chipper put the fire back under me a couple of times and he perfectly fits the requirements of a Swaylockian who wants to share his passion with others. Aren’t WE the one’s who love to chat and pass information around and be inspired for our own projects? How many of your other friends are even close to being as crazed about surfboard design as you? How many times have you told your wife, “just a minute (hour), honey” or has your kid been tucked in bed by your spouse while you poured over the archives and then you “resurface” at about midnight (or later) thinking only about surfboards?
Yup - Ben, you go find another server, your photos of surfers and surfboards have nothing to do with surfboard design.
Talk is cheap, but as Ben says, “photos speak volumes”. I like to check out his photos for the spiritual visual cleansing. Whatever it takes to keep him here is good by me…
What would Roy do?
If you don’t want to see the pictures don’t click on the photo thread. Jeez. I don’t know anything about server space and cost. A lot of the photos are Ho Hum. Some are great and nostalgic. Photos I have not seen in thirty years. I’m here for surfboard building and construction, too. If I see a thread that begins, “what do you think of the CI…” I ingnore it. Boring sh…t. But, I’m looking at these photos and thinking maybe I should build a MR type twin before I get too old and infirm and have to cruise on the long board. Maybe I should try to make a Aipa type stinger even though I thought they were ugly then and still ugly now. OR, a Stubbie, bonzer, skateboard, Michael Peterson, Greeno, whatever. I’m trying to build and ride things I would not of even considered nine months ago thanks to the input of many including the photo guy,
Chip. Keep it coming and I’ll ‘chip’ in a check to Mr. Paler to help cover the extra server cost. A category for photos would be great, too. A good suggestion. No more sensorship, though. Roy thrived on being a pain in the ass. Chips been a gentlemen throughout. The guy has passion. Mike
I’m guilty of posting photos also. I’m sorry.
There are other posts non surfboard design related, and much less relative to surf, hell I just posted one.
But the reason I posted it was because it gave me stoke to see a filthy wave, and be amused at the total ignorance of an individual with no idea what a surfer experiences when we see a wave like that.
Hey Ben, I’m stoked, and the banter here doesn’t take it away.
I love some of that old stuff Ben posts, perhaps the management could add another Forum to the main discussion area for surfing photos, design stays design and piccies stay with piccies.
Ben, stay stoked…
cheers
