the new coil kick tech has me wondering why we hotcoat. if i seal the blank with epoxy and microballoons, do i need to hotcoat?
…in late 80s early 90s I used to did the fins without hot coat; the fins had resin swirls too, so the combo looked good.
However, no matter the sealing, in a finished board you have the wax, some stains, etc that makes the thing impractical.
AND you ll have a high % to turn the lam into a lixiviated one.
CJ3 was doing some boards without hotcoat a while back.
His boards were super light. Lightest I’d ever felt.
He’s on to his own alien tech now though.
maybe just get some spray can sealer ?
or dolphin skin it ?
thanks for the comment, reverb.
I was planning on putting exposed cork on the deck, so no worries about wax. lixiviation, I’ve never heard of (even after two years of chemistry in college).
I've glassed more than 20 boards without hot coats, OR finish/gloss coats. Except for the first couple, they were fine and lasted well...as glass to resin ratio was extremely high, and the boards seem resilient to dents and rode soft and springy. You could see and feel the weave of the 6 oz cloth, and since some weren't sanded fully, even the cutlaps. You gotta lay on lotsa cloth.
The first couple were laziness and a rush to get the shape out there in the right conditions. Well, maybe a couple dozen more the same, as I was making a new board for myself every couple/3 weeks, and experimenting with shapes.
You have to spend the time to laminate really well, and you can cheat with a heavily squeegeed sealer coat if you needed. Take the glassed board out into low sunlight (easy to find in the SunsetDistrict) and look for pinholes. You can spot them if you look carefully, board between you and the sun.
I guess the last 80 or so had hot and gloss coats, since it was somewhat important to look good to attract customers.
I did this on the deck of a board last year worked well I fill coated the bottom and rails though.
For a few weeks, even textured top coats were en vogue. Hard squeegee of a deck patch, lightly sanded with 80 to take off the edges.
I wonder if a light textured bottom coat would be as fast, slower, or faster than a regular sanded 600 grit bottom?
My boards for NorthShore were often not sanded or glossed, no hot coats.
We've had excellent feedback in testing, and paying customer reports are coming in now. Dead weight isn't needed in surfboards.
Hi Mike!
it is not patented is it? too hard to find out how anyways
are you still surfing your tech, or onto that longboard you spoke of a while back? or were you joking?
Looks the shit!
Not patented, patents are only worth anything if you're willing to spend great gobs of money protecting them. If other people want to copy, have a go at it.
I'm not quite to longboard age but I'm getting there haha.
