Went to the shaper supply shop in my far away land and they are out of Addative F. It is 73F at night and 76RH. Highs are in the low 80F’s. Coastal region.
If I don’t wait a week to get the Addative F and go ahead and do the hot coat what am I looking at? It’s my first board with eps and no color just clear. I have a printed emblem on each side but other than that its just clear. 6oz bottom with 4/6oz on top. I believe it is Resin Research Epoxy Resin and hardener which they keep calling dryer/secadora.
I am almost out of resin. I am planning to shape my first fish board and wondering if maybe I should try that one in PU? My first used board was a 7’6 gun in PU but was very narrow and I only used it a few times for fun but I could catch waves on it.
It may be harder to sand your hot coat. Sandpaper may gum up. RR Epoxy can usually be sanded though if you are in a warm climate. 70 plus F. The longer it cures, the easier it sands. But Additive F makes a big difference. I believe Additive F is nothing more than paraffin wax dissolved in Xylene.
Lot of people use RR without addF with no problems. I use it for many years with then without, don’t find a real big change without but i work in “good” conditions ( temp and humidity). Even if i mostly do polyester finish, i add around 2% wax in styren in sanded coat, works the same, styren evaporate, let wax film over surface that isolate curing resin from air, avoid blush reaction.
I almost couldn’t believe my eyes. I saw Xylene on the shelf in our local hardware store yesterday. I went in there to buy some DNA(which they did not have). Bought “Goof Off “ instead. Never agree to remove a “stomp pad” as part of a ding repair.
My Mentor gave me a recipe of 100g monostyrene 4g shredded soft clear candle heated carefully outdoors in a coke can over a candle disturbed every so often until fully combined. Add 3% to resin/harder mix. Monostyrene was easy to find. Cool and keep in empty plastic coke bottle.
Shake your bottle every once in awhile. The wax comes to the top and skims over. If it hasn’t been agitated in awhile it will sometimes harden enough to plug the spout.
