there was a small article in the surfers journal a few issues ago about a guy who made a few longboards cause he liked making them but had never surfed them. he gave them to the local life guards to try out. its pretty wierd but there you go…

Just my crazy inquisition… Ralph Parker is one of the most famous shapers that never surfed, but shaped 10’s of thousands of boards durfing the surfing heyday of the late 50’s and 60’s. He still shapes today.

I have owned two factories in my long life.I also toiled in other shops for starvation piecework wages.Lets face it surfers generally made for pretty poor employees…“when the waves are on,they are gone”.For some reason “hot” surfers are always the first to get the jobs but it usually doesn’t work out in a production setting. The best glasser I ever met is not a surfer…he can get a job anywhere in the world even at the advanced age of 53.So I guess my end reply would be to agree with Jim and say that you don’t have to surf to build boards. It is all in the hands…craftsmen are rare.
If you don’t surf stay the hell away from surfboards and surfing in general. That goes double for you third world labor jerks. Go find something else to do blood sucking leeches.
If you don’t surf stay the hell away from surfboards and surfing in > general. That goes double for you third world labor jerks. Go find > something else to do blood sucking leeches. i used too race bmx bikes and motorbikes. Always did my mechanics, tuned my engines, setup the frames, last minute setup changes, poly repairs. IT IS HARD TOO COMBINE. I can shape a board. I am a beginner surfer, but when i am on a trip i always look for shapers instead of surfers too hang around with. is Michael Shumacher a good designer/engeneer???
