nose width &paddling/wavecatching

what is the effect of nose width on paddling and wave catching? Does a wider or pulled in nose help with paddling and wave entry?

All sorts of opposing theories, then you gotta consider …for what sized board.

For a log, wider allows YOU to paddle from farther forwards, giving you a longer tail, so you should get in earlier, if you don’t pearl once up.

For a shortie, if the board is too small for you, wider helps not only in float and paddle speed, but also in early wave catching, as now you have enough float.

For a really small board, one that too much float and planing surface for your size, a wider nose actually might hang up paddling into waves, as really short boards need late takeoffs anyways, and paddling from a wide nose forward just makes the wave that much steeper when you DO get up…so…

Possibly a narrower, thinner nose works just fine, as you take off late anyways, don’t need MORE back in the tail area, and if you should decide to expend your energy on catching a wave outside, the board tips downwards, penetrates the offshore winds, and you take off early.

Theory is still theory, use what you think works for you.

I’m a narrow thin nose proponent, mostly because all my boards are too big for me.

??? I find that a wide nose mayhelp you paddle better on shitty days but when the waves are semi decent and I’m on my 6,2 (which is big seeming i’m like 5ft8 grom) but it feels good… back on track… yeah I find that I like narrow noses on hollow or steep take-offs… they just feel good…

note opposite on mal for me…

Josh.
