My whole board is laminated with a single layer of tinted 10oz. volan on each side. I am now going to throw on another layer of 4oz. on the deck and probably the bottom too…I would like to add a fin patch and a large deck patch with cut pieces of volan…What’s the best way to go about this? To do a deck patch at this point, can I just tape off the deck and then glass my clear volan over it and then trip like doing cutlaps? If I do that, is there any need to ALSO lay on an entire layer of 4oz. as well? Thanks.

are you going to wrap the rails with the 4oz ? If so then put the patch under it.
Usualy the patches go under the first layer of glass
but in the end it will be the same

You can do it like a big cutlap. Just tape it off, right.
What you should do next time is lay the patch under the 10 oz cloth, then you wont have to worry about cutting laps or grinding edges.
You might want to cover the board in 4 oz after the patch. That way it will give you some buffer when you sand the hotcoat. Just sand down to the 4 oz. I think I remember some one talking about that?
Howzit resin head. I usually put deck patches on top then blend the cut edges by scraping with a razor blade. Works fine for me. especially ifit’s a tint job.Aloha,Kokua
Sounds good. But sometimes I like to get that slightly darker patch for the fin & deck patch. The only way I can think of getting that is by having the extra cloth thickness under the lamination. Kind of that old school look? I guess I could tape off a deck cut lap then do it in tint?
