not sure what to shape for longboard

I was given a 9’1" marko blank from a buddy which was totally unexpected and cool so i figure ill shape a longboard. I since all I’ve ever shaped was boards shorter then 8’0", I was wondering if i could get help on what the demendions would be for length, width, thickness, ROCKER, and CONCAVE. I’m lookin make a board for days that are like 1-4 ft, mushy waves, where I can just cruise on down the line, walk the board, just keeping it simple. I’m a young dude 17, and at 6’2, 225lbs(not too worried about riding the nose but that would be cool too)

thanks in advance

not much rocker all around but enough in the tail to make it turn. id go single fin cause theyre easier to turn in slower mushier stuff. some round rails all the way through with belly in the tail to keep you on track and concave in the nose for noseriding in flatter surf. for smaller surf i like heaveir boards for more momentum for trimming and turning.

Have you got APS3000? If so, I’ll send you a file of mine to check out if you like. Otherwise, about 18" in the nose, 14" in the tail, 22.5" wide, 3" thick, 3" of rocker in the tail and 4.75" of rocker in the nose is what I call pretty general measurements for a 9’1" longboard. Can’t help you out with the concave though as I’ve never done one.

I would recommend pretty much what deanbo says, except I would go to 23.5 in in width.

This blank has good natural rocker so stay with what it has. 4.5 nose and around 3" tail.

Nose at 18", tail at 14". I would go with a rounded pin and vee in the tail for turning. Make

sure that the wide point is up, anywhere from 7 to 9" up from center. The board will nose

ride and turn better. Go with a mild concave under the front foot for drive. I personally don’t

like belly in any board, I think that it slows down the board too much in small surf, and a good

rounded out down rail in the front third will help it nose ride better. It’s a matter of choices

and what you like, I do think that with eps you should glass it heavy for a bit more glide.

Post pics when you get it done!

yeah i have APS3000 how would you go about sending the file?

You should find it attached to this reply. I haven’t tried the concave in it, yet. Dennis Ryder beat me to it on this one.

ibsurfer: As for width, I agree for someone your size I’d suggest something in the 23-24 inch wide point. Other recommended dims look/sound good as well.

Surfteach: I’m confused by this. Are you suggesting the wide point infront of center? I would think this would reduce turn ability, unless you are meaning it will turn better from the nose.

My thought is the more outline curve in the back of the board the better it turns (leaving all other design features alone), and generally the further back the widepoint is the more curve in the back of the board.

It is also my experience that the more or longer the (near) parallel portion of the outline the worse the board turns from the middle of the board.

Am I missing something with the WP infront of center recommendation? Please set me straight.

i agree with 4est…pull the wide point back from center to turn better…pig shape…17n 23center 16.5 tail…catch waves easy and turn like a charm…50/50 rails…3.5 nose rocker …4 in the tail…slight belly down the entire bottom…rocker apex and thickness at wide point…youll get on the nose.

Bob

at 9’1 you won’t have a great nose rider, so focus more on making it a pigesque board.

“9’1 you won’t have a great nose rider”

good point rider of waves

Heres an old greg knoll styled pig shape that i found somewhere online…no clue as to the dimensions, but it kinda gives you the idea.

widepoint wayy back on this one.

thanks mudybech and riderofwaves ive already started workin on it. one more question. concave at the nose? if so how much?

If you want a cruiser i would say no concave. If you want to try to get up on the nose, spoon out a concave 1/8"to 1/4" deepest near the nose(last 12" or so) and blend it out into the nose rocker. Check out the concave debates in the archives to see if you believe they work or not. Alot of other factors play a part in making a nose rider other than the concave. IM 240lbs, and on a 9’1" blank i wouldnt worry about a concave, but man… if you want one …do it! it would not hurt performence… Keep it simple…throw on a 10" pivot fin…3" thick and you’ll have a fun board… Post pics…

Bob

alright well i decided to go with no concave but i know some of you wanted pics so here you go!

right after i cut the outline

and pretty much what i have so far…not close to done

since this was my first EPS blank. i got to learn QUICK how much more different it is from PU. but its interesting to just see what its like to shape.

oh and i went to that surfboard consumer expo thing in del mar which was pretty cool so heres somthing from that
