Nova Scotia Inquiry

I met a student in Queensland (Noosa) who was from Nova Scotia. Noosa was shoulder high and really fun. He starts telling me all about back home and how they have many places like this with hardly any surfers!! Might make a trip there before it gets cold and am looking for a hook up and info etc.

Thanks in advance,

Roger

Before it gets cold? You missed it. 2 seasons: July and winter.

My sister lives in Montreal. She knows cold. I’m only halfway kidding…ask Johan.

a few simple thoughts to keep in mind when surfing in nova scotia:

  1. just like anywhere show respect and you will more than likely get that returned to you (although i have seen broken windshields, slashed tires, etc…)

  2. don’t bring a camera, many surfers are not into exposure and are in it just for the pure stoke of it (you’d have to be given our temps eh)

  3. it’s always warm here, who doesn’t like the water temp getting warm enough to shed the 6/4’s for 3/2’s (just a heads up)

  4. one of the local shapers here can make you a board made for our conditions, i beleive it’s called the catalyst and there are a few shops here that carry boards as well catered to our conditions.

i guess my bottom line is keep it simple, most surfers are easy going until the talk of exposure. there are lots of surf spots in nova scotia but be prepared to come across crowds at the popular breaks. to surfers from away the crowds might seem small but to locals (atleast where i’m from) see a steady incline each year and are not fond of it. bring a map and have fun exploring. keep an open mind about it and you’ll have fun but expect the worst of all conditions and long flat spells between storms. goodluck on finding a hook up but you could probably start with some of the surf shops…

Hey Roger, it all depends on your definition of cold. summer air temps are about 20 C with water between 10 and 15 Celcius (4/3 wetsuit or 3/2 if your local and used to it) winter temps from 0 to minus 20 C with water somewhere between plus 2 and minus 2 C (i don’t know what these work out to in farenheit but think 6/4 with the thickest boots and gloves they make).

summer can easily go three weeks of flat broken up by occasional wasit high beachbreak. winter pumps with world class pointbreaks on a pretty consistent basis although it is quite rare to get above double overhead in size. check out the redbull icebreak site for some vid.

Although the info is out there it is not considered appropriate here to post details about specific spots on the internet, but we have almost as much coastline as california and a pretty small surfing population, do the math.

locals are much friendlier in person than on the internet. if you have any questions feel free to pm me.
