Nuuhiwa noserider nose-rocker

What is the typical nose rocker of the standard Nuuhiwa Noserider?

I am curious to know because my friend has an old log that has 2 1/2" inches of nose rocker and nose-dives like crazy.

I have purchased a custom nuuhiwa and I am afraid that I may have made a mistake. The reason why is because if the Nuuhiwa has that small of an amount of nose rocker, I may reconsider getting it. I just ordered the board 2 weeks ago so it’s not too late for me to order a different model.

I ride East coast beachbreak., The board is intended for knee-chest highwaves.

Once again, the main question is, what is the typical nose rocker of the David Nuuhiwa Noserider?

I ride a variety of low rocker boards from the 60’s, as well as a Tudor Nuuhiwa Noserider II. No problem with east coast Long Beach, New York surf…I prefer low rocker. Here’s my Nuuhiwa, the photos have been posted before. If you’re not used to 60’s low rocker boards, might not be for you. But as I said, I prefer them this way…

If you have the right wave, there’s nothing finer than a low nose rocker board. Look at all the surf movies from the 60’s and you’ll see what I mean.

I have a tudor nuuhiwa & surf it in beach break all the time. I dont find a problem when it’s under shoulder high. Just angle your take offs. It’s an awesome noserider, the best i’ve ridden when it’s small &clean.

Hey guys.

I ride 60’s boards all the time with as little as 3" of nose rocker, but for whatever reason, the one that I rode yesterday nose-dived and pearled very easily. That board had 2 1/2" of nose rocker. Maybe that extra half inch makes all the difference?

By the way, I know that the pearling wasn’t my fault. Not to brag or anything, but I’m a very advanced longboarder. (I wouldn’t be saying this if it didn’t apply to the thread).

John,

I’m going to print this thread and post it at the WAR Room/Gazebo.

I have an original Bing Nuuhiwa noserider at my house. I’ll measure the rocker if you want me to, but I can tell you right now, that it’s going to be around 2". Those boards were (and are) very flat.

By the way, how many boards do you need? Pretty soon your parents are going to have to re-mortgage their castle so they can keep paying for your boards.

I had a question about the pronunciation of the name “Nu’uhiwa”.

A lot of people I know say it like this “noo-'wave-uh”.

I think it should be more like “noo-oo hee-wa”, or an ultra-Anglisized “noo hee-wa”.

What do you guys think?

Hey josh,

Very funny with the printing…

It’s quite possible that my friend measured the rocker inaccurately. Also, It may not have been a continuous curve of nose rocker, thus the constant nose-dives.

Do you have any problems when riding your Nuuhiwa (specifically nose-diving)?

Currently I have 12 boards

Joel Tudor pronounces is “New-wave-uh”

Also Josh, i’ll give you the money for a gallon of resin if you sand my bonzer.

I don’t ride the board much, but otherwise, I have no problem with it, other than the fact that it’s water logged and heavy from so many ding repairs. You just have to get used to riding it. It’s not like the rockered-out newer boards. Even that Joel Tudor you surf is rockered out compared to an older Bing like the DNNR.

Big Bill rode the Noserider that I have and he loved it. Carl Danish used to tear it up on that board years ago. Even my dad still loves that board.

I’d be willing to be that Tudor is pronouncing the name wrong. I could be wrong, though. It just doesn’t seem like that name would have a “v” sound in it, especially the way it’s spelled. I thought the Hawaiian and Polynesian languages pronounced every vowel in each word.

Oh well.

I guess if I hate it I could always sell it.

Yea, My Tudor has 3 3/4" nose rocker.

I’ve heard others pronounce it “New-wave-uh” as well.

Once again, I’ll buy you a gallon of resin if you sand my bonzer. The fins are removeable so it’s not even that annoying to sand.

keep in mind that this board also has a lot of tail rocker…it really sucks the board down from the back…you can feel it when your paddling, and i imagine this helps keep the nose up just the same as it does when you’re noseriding.

My Tudor Nuuhiwa is super flat, minimal rocker, much less so than my 9’8 1967 Con CC Rider Light Weight pintail, which I also consider to be a superb noserider. Both of these boards have significant tail rocker, along with uptuned rails in the tail. I have no problem with pearling on either board.

That said, occasionally I do go head over heels while dropping in on these boards, depending on the surf. Watch the old Dale Davis and Bruce Brown films and you’ll see the top riders of the day occasionally do the same. I think with super low rocker longboards, it will happen occasionally to even seasoned surfers. Even Tudor himself.

Most, if not all, of my longboards (mainly 60’s boards, too many to count) have very low rocker…typical reaction at the beach is "whoa, that board is really flat). The Tudor Nuuhiwa Noserider II is as flat as any of them, and in fact, has lower rocker than most of my 67 era boards.

You’re getting into a board that is a one trick pony. If you have 12 boards you are fine. It wouldn’t be my choise for the beach break, but? who cares.

I

My Nuuhiwa will only see the light of day when it’s in the knee-chest high range and clean with predictable sections. All I want for this thing to do is to noseride in the said conditions.

I think I made the right choice.

John mistook the mantra of “Ride Everything” to mean “buy everything”.

Yes Josh, I’m glad you get such a kick out of yourself.

So what about the sanding my board for a gallon of resin?

Sure, I’ll sand it. When will it be done?

It’ll be done being laminated, hot-coated etc. in about a 5-7 days. Depends on how lazy I am.

I’ll PM you with the details when it is completed.
