I used to live in Brooklyn and was wondering if and how people shape/glass in NYC. Small apts, no basements, no garages, etc.
How is it done?

Rooftops. At least thats how we roll on the UES.
Rooftop? That’s no joke. I heard of some bar that opened in Williamsburg that has a shaping room in it.
Hurricane Hopeful - - I think it’s just called surf now, and the shaping room is gone. They realized they would be better off (restaurant/bar wise) with an outdoor patio instead.
That a bit sad. But understandable. I had a friend who had this sick art studio somewhere on a pier in Red Hook. The whole building was small art studios. I’m figuring there must be someone in there or something like that available.
I pretty easily found someone in the old navel yards that was willing to rent me out a little space in his metal shop for a few days, but I have no tools and no experience shaping boards, so I put it on hold. Craigslist around and I’m sure you could find something. Glassing may be a bit tougher, but there are a few places around Bushwick that allow people to use all sorts of noxious compounds. It can be done. It may be more practical, in the city, to glass with epoxy due to the lower toxins and stinkiness.
I’m gearing up to do some shaping out in Red Hook starting in January. I’m spending a bunch of time in Brooklyn these days and want to make some boards for the East Coast waves, so I’m setting up in a friends studio on Van Brundt. Stoked on it! Soon enough I hope to offer up my services to local surfers, but I’m just shaping in Brooklyn for myself and my friends for the time being.
wow shapers are like cockroaches, you will find them everywhere won’t you. Even where(some) people don’t want them. Good luck to shaping guys
I shape out of my loft in Brooklyn. I use epoxy, I would never get away with using poly.
marke - do you have a local place in Brooklyn to pick up shaping supplies? resin, blanks, etc?
Hey adk!
Are you set up in RedHook yet? I’m moving to Brooklyn once my house sells. Could take a couple months but once it happens was planning on setting up a studio ASAP. Interested in sharing space? I don’t know anyone in the city who surfs, I’m hoping to find chill people. I have stands, planers, tools, fred, 18 gallon air compressor, lights…the whole works.

I live in NYC and I shape and glass my own boards. In my garage.
Wow you have a garage?!? Where do you live?
I’l be in Brooklyn by March 1. Once I’m settled I’ll be frantically looking for an art studio space to shape/glass (EPS/Epoxy). So far I’ve found a couple spaces ranging from $400-900 a month. Obviously too much to pay for a ‘backyard’ shaper.
Anyone with any interest in sharing space?
Anyone know of available apace?
Send me a PM.
Thanks
Rick.
sorry had to bump this…
My shaping room is sitting in a pitiful pile right now and needs a home!
I’m in Carroll Gardens and looking in surrounding areas for a studio.
