Ok I’m getting dreadlocks put in on Saturday and was hoping to go surfing on Sunday. I know that salt water helps the hair knot up and I’ve got a hood coz its chilly here, but I’m worried it might be too soon to get them wet and they my un knot.
After digging through the archives for “hydraulic”, “untying”, and “waspafarian”, people seem to be split between vacuum bagging the flexible epoxy into the dreads (fewer bubbles) or just kneading it in by hand (fewer consumables).
Yes I’m white, no I’m not joking, and yes I know its a lot of work, I but I’m after a nice set of maintained dreads, not the type from neglect, been there done that and it not good, yes I have gotten epoxy in my hear before, also not a good look.
I know its got nothing to do with surf board design, but I really want to go surfing. Mayby I should just get them postponed till after I go surfing,
It shouldn’t be a problem after having them put in.
I had my pubes dreadlocked and it wasn’t a weave either. I earned them. I started growing them seriously in the 7th grade. In the 9th grade I had a tattoo of sergeant stripes put on my hydraulics so I could pull rank anytime I wanted.
The combo dreads and tattoo in the nether region has worked well for me. Its kind of the ultimate expression for me as in " the white man will never get me by the balls" in a perverted way. I wear a reverse thong( skinny part in the front) when I surf and it seems to be a crowd controller for me.
I don’t know how to create dreads, but it does remind me of a funny story. Growing up one of my best friends was black, which as you know is unusual for a surfer. When we got into college he let his hair grow long and it became dreadlocked. He also had a goatee. He was the most mellow guy who would not hurt a fly, but he scared the shit out of all the surfers everywhere we went. He became a big joke, because none of our friends would go to lowers without Norman because you could sit next to him and get all the waves you wanted. Norman was stoked because he never had to drive to trestles and everyone always bought him lunch to get him to go.
A mullit on anyone spells dork louder than dreds on a white dude! The worst is a long pony tail on a guy that is bald on top. Dreds don’t look good on black guys either. A Dr J Fro’s the ticket, brother. I don’t know if surfing will help, though. My advise, get a hair cut. But, if your young and not a middle aged guy having a mid life crisis, go for anything you want and have some fun before responsibility and respectablity rule your life! Mike
geez, a little too much hairstyle prejudice going on in this thread. i reckon do whatever you like with your hair. it’s entirely up to you. dreads definitely wont come unstuck in salt water. you’ll be fine mate.
Had a few cans last night when I up the post up, regreting it a bit now, but it gave me a chuckle this morning, glad I could make a few people laugh. I’ve got Scottish ginger hair that locks up on its own and I’ve been fighting a loosing battle against sinse if sprouted used to keep it shaved but it made me look too aggressive and I got bored so just let it grow, a friend is going to help me sort it out.
But don’t worry guys its just hair, I’ve got plentty but if your lossing yours no need to feel any resentment, look at Slater didn’t do him any harm. Its a fact of life and I’m sure I’ll be catching you all up and shaving my head in 10 or 20 year, but might as well enjoy it while I’ve got it.
I hear a hood in the surf for 2/3 of the year so its got nothing to do with surfing or being cool, just tamming the beast.
