I had the same type of experience with cheap “pop outs” before getting my first BYRNE shaped for me by Mike Baron.
The glassing was always at issue. Even if the shape was OK, the glassing was terrible.
I got the opportunity to go pick one out of a stock of them once.
Here was my test…I took my fingernail and would run it along the bottom right at the base of the rail. There would be a distinct “crackling” sound like crumbling a cracker on every one. Especially at the point where it turned into a hard edge and around the fin boxes.
I’m sure you can figure out what it was…it was the glass breaking under my fingernail!
I am of the opinion that must of these boards are single layer 6oz with the resin sprayed on.
I doubt a squeegee ever touched the surface of any of them.
The 6oz would make them durable enough to withstand the trip, but not enough to withstand any serious surfing.
In a matter of weeks the deck would be crumbling and the rails would be cracked…and heaven forbid the tail should EVER make contact with the ground!
Needless to say, they are all gone.
After saving up, getting a board from MB and riding it for the first time…I finally understood!
I will never again buy a “pop out”
My buddy Greg is in possession of my first MB and it still surfs like a champ with very few repairs.
I have beat the dog sh!t out of my other 2 and they are still wailing away.
THAT is what prompted me to start shaping.
I wanted to be able to give somebody the same kind of STOKE that I got from that first MB.
Sorry…I’m rambling
