so i was prepping my boards to put in my car to be ready to go whenever ts florence hits new england coastline, and i leaned my R.A. saber up against the house. big mistake! i turned my back for a second and it was down. it had hit my sisters jeep and a ding resulted. i’m now debating what to do about this. there’s no place around here that will probably do it overnight or anything, so i’m thinking of maybe trying to fix on my own. i have some 6 oz cloth, and maybe some 4oz too but i’m not sure…haven’t looked. i have a little bit of poly resin from a ding kit i got off from wetsand…should i try to do this?
i have attached photos of the problem in hopes that i can get some advice as to how to go about this thing as far as removing the glass? how much cloth/resin will be needed, how to go about the whole thing really. i have the ding repair scriptures book but i have yet to really do this big of a repair, only small little ones on a junk board i have.
repair this thing? wait and have it done professionally? surf it with some sort of temp. solution if there is one? what should i do?
is it watertight? (i.e. when you try to suck on it, does air come through?) I would just throw some duct tape on it for the trip, or get some solar rez, rub it in and get it fixed better after it goes flat.
I was going to say the same as A. Chateaux - he beat me to it.
I would go to the closest shop and get a tube of Solarez - sand around the bad area - spread some solarez around - do it out of the direct sunlight - pull some wax paper over it to smooth it out - take it out in the sun to cure and sand it smooth with a little 150 grit. It’s a good sunny day here in the Northeast to do this and you’ll be ready.
Swell should start picking up tonight or tomorrow some time but looks like it won’t last too long.
After the swell you can dig into a proper repair - don’t try to rush it if it’s more than you can deal with on short notice.
yeah i was thinking that. my sister has a tube of Sun Cure ding-all. would this work just as well…i’m pretty sure it’s the same thing as solar-ez…just different make, no?
thanks guys. i got a little too freaked out i think. you kinda get anxious when there might actually be a chance of waves up here though…although florence does look like she might turn out to be a bust.
i will try the suncure, thanks for the tip. it should be easy enough for a pro-repair guy to fix even with that crap on it as well right? i have always steered clear of the stuff because it seems like a cheap fix to me, but i’m sort of in a pinch for time this time around…though i do have other boards i could ride i suppose…
…hey Ambrose, you need to ask Balsa or other Frenchie fella how to write voilá (I think this is the way…)
Hmmmhm, not quite: “voilà”, with an “accent grave”. “Voilà” actually is a contraction of the verb “voir” (to see) at the imperative mode: “vois!”, and “là” (“there”): so, basically, it means: “see there!” , “look there!”. But it evolved into something that really means: “here we go”, now.
heh…i just did some ding repair myself in anticipation of florence (far more serious than what you’ve got). everything looks watertight. just take some 220-grit, rough up the whole area, and give it a couple light coats of clear acryllic spray paint. if any of the scratches are especially deep, rub a little compound in there first…then spray. that ding doesn’t appear to be anything worth worrying about. have fun with florence.
thanks for the help guys. i used the suncure and waxpaper deal and it worked fine. so far florence has been a bust up here in new england for the most part. some alright waist sets last night, but today it was bunk. how’d it turn out down in FL for you soulstice?
fun surf at Sebastian Inlet yesterday AM…chest high or so. super clean. has a PM sesh closer to home…Delray Beach. today, went to PB expecting to score it good an empty, and the swell wasn’t coming in at all…anywhere. went all the way up to Ft. Pierce for my morning sesh today and got it okay…waist-chest. reasonably clean and walled…but a little inconsistent. swell is supposed to peak on Wednesday–Thursday…so i’m lookin’ forward to the pick-up.
My favorite temporary repair tape is the aluminum tape used for ducts - not “duct tape” (that’s not even good for repairing ducts). The stuff goes down smooth, sticks great, and doesn’t let any water in.
I’ve had problems with packing tape staying stuck. Stickers work good in a pinch.
The best solution is to just patch the damn dings. Sand em, glass em, gloss em. It’s not that hard. Maybe an hour including waiting for resin to cure and your board’s as good (almost) as new.
