Me and my little hull pulled up to my reef yesterday figuring that the swell had dropped to head high or so. Nope! A last gasp pulse jacked up by the tide resulted in consistant double over-headers. I switched in a 9.5 inch fin and paddled out… In the same sized stuff the day before, my Mitzven 7’4" thruster kicked ass. But I was feeling a bit nervous about flinging myself over the edge with a whole lotta hull. There was a fair amount of bounce on the face from the cliff backwash that didn’t make it any easier… Bottom line; too much nose and too much tail make for too much speed and not too much control. I needed bigger feet or a narrower board…I think I’ll stick with the thruster in the big stuff. What to you other hullers do when it gets serious?
What template do you have? I have the Island template with a little more width and volume for Cali waves. I have only taken it in shoulder high surf and it really flies. I usually don’t surf in more than a couple feet overhead so I assume the hull is great in that size surf but don’t know about 2x overhead. I have side bitters on mine. I like the added ability to turn a little for back on the tail even though that is not the idea of a hull.>>> Me and my little hull pulled up to my reef yesterday figuring that the > swell had dropped to head high or so. Newbs- KP and I share a hull bottomed semi gun for the big stuff.it is 8’10" 14x21x12 single fin.extreme hull and rails.it works in 2’ on up.handles chop, wind etc.

Don’t get to surf in much more than head high or so in my region. I have a 7’8" with side-bitters. He added a little more width and volume for Cali waves. What a great board in general…just unreal.
Question for hull riders. What is the difference in the design of a hull compared to a regular surfboard? i know they are supposed to turn off the upper portion of the board, but i dont understand how. Thanks.

What a great board in general…just unreal. i have a 7’4" one he made for me-he had made a similar one for himself to take on vacation to Hawaii. It handled sizeable h-bay so we figured it could handle most anything we get around here.It did.Now we are several years older we are going with more length-in Greg’s case 7’8" and for me 8’10" plus.I still ride stubbies in the 7’- 7’4" range, but when the points get big, I feel much more comfortable on a longer, gunnier board.(currents and all…)

I assume the side bitters help with backside surfing a little more. Mine has side bitters and I noticed that there was really very minimal drag with them on which is not the typical case with a tri fin board. I have all the fins leading edges aligned together. May move the center fin back an inch to see what that does.
