Old Infinity Restoration

Pick this old Infinity up for $30. Beaten to hell but got it water tight and had some fun rides. Couldn’t help myself and finally stripped it down to the core. Core isn’t pristine but I’m going to see what I can do with it for shits and giggles. Been enjoying the discussions around here and gaining a little knowledge I didn’t have before. Might be wasting my time, but I think I might just come out with something kinda cool.

Dimesnions are 9’6 18.5 22.5 14.75 3.5. Down rails, pretty thick and soft in the middle, hard in the rear. 5" rocker up front, 4"ish in back. No concave per se, flat through the middle blending into a vee toward the tail. Not a light board. Weighed in at 25lbs before I stripped it.

Wonder if I should stay true to the thickness and rails as is, or would there be something in exploring other options? 50/50 rails? Beveled? Leaning against adding any concave, but what says Swaylocks? Should I consider? I know it’s all about tradeoffs. Hoping for a good all around board. Mostly surf San O.

Has a single glassed in 10" fin. Tempted to lay some plugs in for a 2+1 option.

That looks like a fun project. I can’t speak to how it will function should you change it up a bit but, I would try to bring it back to life as is. Good looking shape. Look forward to seeing your progress.

yup I wouldn’t change the basic shape too much… bring the stringer down flush, make sure it dries out before you reglass it… it should not weigh 25 pounds.   Was the nose snapped off at some time?  If so you could cover that with a fabric inlay…for the rest of the board maybe do an airbrush or light red tint or something, but don’t cover up the nose block or tail block too much…Have Larry make you a new fin rather than reuse the old one?  Did it have a box or did you dig out a chunk of foam to remove it?  (there are better ways if it was the latter!)

How did you strip the fiberglass off the rails ,without pulling a lot of the foam off?

Thanks for the relplies guys. Keith, it weighs 13lbs stripped and dry, was 25 with old glass. Hoping to keep it under that 25lb mark. Looks like the nose was snapped, or near snapped. Will inlay some fabric in that spot. Was able to remove fin and finbox intact without pulling foam. Trying to decide if painting the blank or tinting resin is best route…

Artz, most of the glass came right off as it was delaming. The spots that didn’t I left then carefully sanded down.

Gonna stay true to current shape/rails. Digging the tail rocker, hoping it translates to nice turns. Does 3.5" thick sound a tad too thick? Don’t know anything about Infinity boards.

On a 9’6"? Hell, no!
3.5" seems a bit thin for that outline.

What are you going to do with the small nicks and holes in the blank? Microballoons, Qcell?

Qcell for the nicks and holes.

Thats going to be a lot of fun Surfchurch, time to start lurking around garage sales to see what I can find, thanks for the inspiration.
