old surfing video

I found a tape with video my Dad shot back in 1987. This first clip is of Oneula and me and cousin Kevin Farm surfing small Shark Country. Oneula and I are riding old logs from the 60s. The boards were usually stashed under the house and the one I had was waterlogged and very heavy.

The audio has some funny commentary of my Dad and uncle Ted. The video was shot from uncle Ted’s porch. This was Oneula’s once a year surf vacation back home to our beach, and you can tell he was out of shape. I’m the dark guy. Kevin paddles out after we’re already in the water with his custom Ole
single fin. Kevin’s brother Kimo had some of the best boards ever and
passed them on to him. Kevin learned on 2 classic brewer mini guns that
were originally made for Rusty Starr.

I have 2 more clips that I need to cut down to be able to post on youtube. One also has my little sister and Kevin, the other is me and Oneula at White Plains at Barber’s Point Naval Air Station. This was back when it was still a military beach and there were few people in the water. In the late 70’s I surfed out there almost every morning with my friend Jon Crouch and maybe one or two other people. Those were the days when you could be the only one out for hours.

Somewhere I have a clip of Oneula and me at Makaha in the early 90s. The waves were overhead that day and fun.

pretty cool stuff!

Haven’t been able to get the other videos from 1987 online, but I found this little gem from the early/mid 90’s. Oneula had been home for a couple of years and got himself back into surfing shape. This is mostly White Plains beach with a little bit of Makaha in there.

As I have time, I’ll convert more video I have from the 80’s of north shore contests, and good south shore surf that I shot.

Thanks for posting that. Reminds me of what I love about surfing. Was out at dawn this morning right out front with just my son and I before work for me - school for him and a beautiful 4 foot swell - soft off shore wind. No one else even came to look. Wish we had it on film.

You must love having your dad’s comentary in the background.

We re-connected with Debbie Bower ( Wayman) thanks to your previous video.

Thank you

So good to hear that you got a hold of Debbie.

The next time you talk or email her let her know I send my aloha. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen her. I have fond memories of the days when we all lived and surfed in Ewa.

Yeah, it’s nice to have something of my father to listen to or watch.

Aloha, Harry (sharkcountry)

nice switching-stance moves… ! just the smooth move from moving your rear foot forward…NOT, the chop-hop like the kids today… Makaha … being Makaha …

Hele On!

I have another surf video clip. This is from the 80s, when I was a TV news cameraman. There’s shots of big south shore at Bowls, Panics, and Kewalos. The day I shot Panics was the same day one of the big tour boats tried to come in during a set and lost control, then ran over a body surfer and killed him. There’s some windsurfing at Diamond Head with Robbie Naish and Pete Cabrinha. There’s also some motor cross stuff from Aloha Stadium.

I shot everything except the motor cross racing.
