on any sunday...........the movie by bruce brown.

got a early 90s vhs version of bb's on any sunday.

not a surf movie, but had some great stuff about steve mcqueen in the beginning that wasn't in the original movie.

it's the way i remember steve, not the way most saw him(thanks for being my friend s.mc.).

well worth the 25 cents i paid for at the local library used book store foresure.

if you ride or have ever ridden an m.c. this movie brings back the thrill.

..............and many, many fond memories for me.

Yeah watched it many times its a great movie, showing a cool period in time in the U.S.A.

That was one cool movie.  I got to race against DickMann maybe 15 times, VetExpert then he turned OldTimerExpert, at SandHill (Brentwood), ArgyllPark (Dixon),  and PrairieCity (Sacto).

That bike McQueen jumped, wasn't it a Husky made to look like a Trumpet?

Desert riding is for lunatics.  Going blind 75 mph thru cactus brush and blind canyons,  you gotta be kidding.

I know there has got to be a surfboard blank, some resin, a yard of cloth, a Surform or a Skil 100 in there somewhere… Maybe McQueen wore depends??

Went to see On any Sunday when it was released…a blast. At the time , Bultaco Matadors and Montessa KingScorpions ruled the world…the Spaniards !..Who was that unbelievable biker  , Dave Smith ?..like to see that movie again.

I raced with Dick Man as well, at all the places you wrote… I was just a kid racing in the 100cc expert class, back then there wer not a lot of racers, so they combined us with the old timers alot . Dick was pretty fast on that old BSA he rode.

The movie is still a family favorite.

It’s interesting how Bruce’s movies kind of brought surfing and motorcycle racing to many people who would have maybe never looked twice at ether activity, and sudenly life changed for generations.

I know they had a huge affect on my family and my life… God bless you Bruce Brown!

Malcolm Smith, motorcycle legend!

That movie made me want to be in moto-cross. After seeing all the wear and tear on my cousins, I'm glad I got into surfing instead.

This article is mostly about Husqvarna and Steve McQueen.

Thanks for that link.  Good read.

Cool stuff, I thought Husky sponsored McQueen. I never saw him race, but he was more a desert rider.
DKW with the leading link forks?
My '69 CZ 250 broke my leg in March '71. It landed on my leg at Carnagie, after I got Tboned by a throttle stuck Husky rider in 250Novice. Leg in a cast for 13 months, so traded my CZ for a BSA500MX to ride at OceanBeach from my house…in a short cast.
Any of you guys from SanFrancisco? Rumor then was JimFlothie, another surfer, rode his DT-1 Yamaha on the beach lots, and was the best rider in SanFrancisco.
My vote goes to MartyMalchow (1958GrandNational #5), my neighbor 4 houses down, or BarryLeonard, who used to drift his bikes around the 14thAve. and Quintara districts at night.

saw it at a drive in when it first came out. had a yamaha at the time. after the movie, all i could think about was getting rid of the yamaha and getting a husky ...

Awesome movie for sure. Motocross and surfing are a fantastic combination of hobbies. Both based around adrenaline! Both allow you to get very much “in the moment” and forget the rest of the world. The bonus point with a dirt bike is you can work all week and KNOW you’re going riding on Saturday. Unlike surfing where you may go surfing IF there are waves. Very important in places without consistent surf. The only bummer in motocross is the very real risk of injuries. I’ve seen Life Flight or an ambulance take away an unfortunate rider more than once, then the rest of us are right back to it 10 minutes later.

ha ha...

Motocross... one broken left tib/fib, 3 pins, wire, plate, 3 screws.

2 pins in left pinkie, one pin in left ring finger

                    one right femur greenstick

                    one left ulnar greenstick.

2 separates of left shoulder, two of the right.

                    1 discolated left shoulder.

pinkies and ring fingers broken and healed crooked

                    over 6 broken ribs.

3 total broken collarbones from motocross

                    that's just me.

not every race, but for sure every other, someone get's carted away.

Nothing I"ve done is more fun than motocross.  The start with 39 other guys, the feeling of railing berms and flying.

I was lucky where and when I lived, for dirt biking.

  3 blocks from OceanBeachSanFrancisco.

  4 houses from GrandNationalDirtTrack #5 in 1958.

Local sand tracks at the zoo and in Ft.Funston.

Local practice tracks at SanBrunoMountains, 3rd st., ChampionSpeedway,

Local pros living within 2 miles, always drving by and checking up on us Novices.

And no, I never got good, not even after 300+ actual AMA races.

hah!  I used to play around a little with those bikes, because my older brothers were into bikes - this is me when I was about 14 or 15.  Then at 16 I got my driver’s license, and I was off to the beach, every chance I got!  My bro couldn’t understand it - said everytime he drove by the beach the surfers were just sitting on their boards, looking like a bunch of penguins LOL.

Now he’s racked up enough injuries over the years - broken ribs, punctured lung, punctured spleen - he’s practically an invalid, poor guy.

I’ll take surfing any day!

Oh yeah, and I do remember the movie, it was cool.

Great thread!

Brings back memories for me too. I was bike mad from the age of 16 to 26. Spent a few seasons around 1970 road racing a 250cc Bultaco around the race circuits in NSW such as Oran Park, Amaroo, Bathurst, Phillip Island in Victoria, great fun.

Dave

My first “Dirt” bike ~

I was like 8 years old and had to buy it secretly because of “Moms - No motorcycle till you’re 18 yrs. old rule.” My friend and I went in halfs for it. Bought it used and it screamed. He aborted when he slammed into a few fences so I took it to the guy we bought it from and asked him if I could leave it in his garage. He was really cool about it though, said he’d leave the back door open for me. Had quite a few others since and would really like one now actually. A bit larger perhaps … lol.

marty malchow…

yeah,.

…ambrose…

I just spelled it that way

because you did.
