links on right are an interesting read…some are very questionable (they can prevent turbulent flow via bottom hull design???) And wow…they’re using “Pro/E to the next level”…sounds really impressive…cough…bullshet…cough
They just received a patent for a surfboard with hollow composite body # 6,8000,006
It is a $1000 board. The weight of the 9 footer is impressive. They make a kinda clunk sound when you knock on them. The longboard has a very standard single to double concave through the tail. I haven’t seen the shortie, but I’m supposed to get back to their rep for a swap and ride session - they surf the beach where I live.
No mass produced model is ever going to be adequate. Regardless of the engineering, three models just do not cover the needs of anything but the tiniest minority of surfers. If you happen to be the right height/weight and have a preference for that type of design, fine. For the other ninety nine per cent of the surfing population I suspect it’s just another big yawn…seen it all before too many times.
It’s supposed to be 9 lbs (roughly 4 kgs), felt like it in my hands. I’ve talked to people who’ve ridden em, like the lightness, but said you could feel the board compress like a balloon (ie: flatten top deck towards bottom) on a hard turn.
The shape is sweet, it is engineered with flex, haven’t felt it under my feet…wouldn’t matter anyway, something that long and wide is not a part of my surfing repertoire.
Dunno about the whole hollow board thing, but they say you can flush it out when you are done and put the plug back in, the inside is NON-absorbent.
This may all be irrelevant because from what I know HydroEpic’s surfboard program is currently on indefinite hold. Supposedly they had arranged for a factory in Mexico to produce the production boards (all the existing ones are basically prototypes). Unfortunately when the HE guys went to Mex to do the walk through and cut the final deal they were told that it would cost 2-3 times more than the initial estimate to make the boards to their specs. This would have pushed the cost of the boards to the consumer into the stratosphere. The main financial backer then pulled out and the company is re thinking their strategy. At this point I would hold on to any HE board, it may become very rare.
“surfboard construction having a hollow composite body”
youre pullin’ my chain right?
Nope. Wasn’t pulling your chain. But I apparently had a brain disconnect. I converted your 68000,006 to 6,800,006, but then erroneously entered 6,000,006. Sorry about that.
OK this just in. HydroEpic has a new backer who is funding the ongoing development of production tooling. I understand that the new HydroEpic Brewer models may be available for inspection at the January Surf Expo in Orlando. If so, I’ll be there showing them at Booth 2036. Stay tuned.
