That was a great read.
Thanks for posting that up. I really enjoyed it.
I know we have commented on this before, but one day Geoff will no longer be shaping and that will be a very sad day for surfing indeed. I hope he get’s the credit he is due one of these years.
Thanks for the link that was a great read. It’s interesting how surfboard designs are marginalized until they are embraced, then seemingly overnight they are accepted.
It’s laughable that coming in 2nd 4 years in a row makes a board design a “failure”. Performance shortboards are just now starting to catch up with putting the wide point back of center.
No doubt.
Actually ever single so called modern thruster on the pro tour is really a modified lazor zap. All that really meant was a surfboard that had a wider tail and no nose. The first zaps only had 15.5 tails and were only 19.5 wide. we are only talking a couple of inches different than today. Thickness was one of the main differences from then until now and I think an argument can still be made for Geoff’s way of thinking with regards to thickness and bottoms.
Four world title runner ups shows that board comes in second to talent. Slater no more won his titles because of his 17’’ wide boards than Horan lost his because of his 20’’ tail models. Much of it is politics anyway regardless of who says different. When you have something that is subjective there is no way to make it even close to fair or keep politics out of it.
Great read, Just makes me want one even more. WIsh i had the cash to splash.
Funny, they don't get such a great rep, but when i trawl ebay looking for them, they ALWAYS get lots of bids, they never go cheap either. D'oh!!!!.
I don't really keep up with what the big name shapers are doing, but lately i've been checking out different websites, and i see more Modern/performance/thruster "fish" style boards, which, compared to hi perf thruster, have a wider tail, wider centre width, and more volume. Interesting to me haha. I also see DHD has a "nugget", for bigger surfers, that has the round tail and is chunky.
Just uselss info/food for thought,
Long time lurker - first post.
Just got my nugget from solo (it's the 6'6" Horan a couple of threads back). Still trying to explain to the wife the need for the cash outlay when I haven't bought a board retail in 20 yrs and can make 3 for the cost of one.
First impression out of the box - Massive surfboard. Been riding 6'2' - 6'6" hybrid fishes for the past 10 yrs and this board looked much larger than what I was used to. Board was finished very well.
First impression riding (surf waist-stomach dumping shorebreak) Not enough wave to give a real comment, just a general impression. The board does not feel as large as it looks. It is extremely loose without being squirly. On a lined-up wave, I got the trained East coast reaction and tried to pump the board - it doesn't pump like a multi-fin, it turns when you pump. I'll have to learn to break the habit of pumping.
I'll give a better review when I have actually caught something decent with it. I'm on the East coast during summer, who knows when that will be.
Good interview, great read.
Tell all your friends to read this article. So many people don't realise the influence this man had on the standard surfboard most people ride today. And copying is complementary, whether they are as good his or not.
The couple of times I saw him surf years ago he was standout. Big influence on my approach to boards, fins, and waves riding.
I have to agree with what Chenye says in that article, whatever it takes, buy a board from McCoy because now is the time of Geoffs master shapes.
Even you you don’t really “get it”, the Nuggets are on another level and one day you just might click with it, if you don’t, then at least you can proudly say that you own a board custom made for you from one of the greatest designer/shapers the world has seen.
I’m dribbling, I know… Geoff got his hooks into me long long ago…
Thanks for sharing!
