Opaque Resin Panels

I have been doing opaque resin panels for years but am always open for new ideas. If you have anything to add please let us know.

I basically use Reichold gloss resin and pigments. I tape off the board using 3m tape. Mix the gloss resin and pigmenst. (I am digging the tans and greens I have been seeing on the internet).

i apply the color just like a gloss…flow it on and walk it out. Let it flow. Set it off kind of hot and try to get the thickness so I don’t have a ridge of resin on the rail side of the panel.

I am also digging the full side panels that are done top and bottom and meet at the center of the rail apex. Have to be careful when you rub out the gloss and wetsand the rails as you can burn through.

Where are you buying your pigments?? I have been using surf source. I heard Fiberglass Hawaii has some good stuff and also Foamez.

   ANy new tricks out there???

I like the fiberglass hawaii pigments myself…

I recently did a purple resin panel bottom with some pearl in it… came out nice, basically taped off to get a reverse cutlap look (white rails).

I’ve been doing foam stain decks (single color) lately and having fun with it…been thinking of trying a translucent resin panel over a foam stain, I think it might look cool…

ive had alot of mess ups with doing color panales in the past until i was showen how to use DMA and coblot with the resin

ive done alot of panales that would not kick at all, some would take a day or two to cure, and the wieredest one was when it would kick off right away then a few days later it would bubble up and get all messy

since using the DMA and coblot i have got ride of all these problems

the only problem i have with the coblot and DMA is laying the resin down fast enough cause you only have a few miniutes until the resin goes off

but if cures fast a perfectly every time i use the stuff so i like it[img_assist|nid=1066577|title=resto|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=487|height=719]

I used to use DMA but don’t even know where to get it. Never used cobalt. Gene Cooper posted some stuff about using cobalt a while ago. Most of my panels have been very pale with mostly white pigment which doesn’t seem to slow the resin down that much. How many ccs of cobalt would you use in a quart of resin? I realize it’s a hard question to answer (outside temps/resin mix etc) I am just trying to get a basic idea. My glossing room is actually all temp controlled. I keep it at around 78 degrees.

My biggest problem as of late is pigments. I had them wired back in the 70’s. I knew which company made the best colors. Mainly Ram and PDI. I don’t think they exist anymore.

all the pigments that i use are Kerox pigments or the ones made in house at Surf Supply

at 78 degrees i would normally put in 3 drops of DMA and 3 drops of colbolt and i would probably have around 5 minutes until it starts to kick, you dont need to add much at all to the resin

i was told that the DMA will heat up the resin so it kicks off fast and the colbolt is there to help cure the risen just right

im also using alot of pigment when i do these panels, like for every 10 oz’s of resin im using 1 oz of pigment

I know the answer is here on the site somewhere but this look the perfect thread to have it again. What is the best time to pull up the tape? A little early when the resin is still sticky but risk having some stretchy filaments like mozzarella cheese? Or a little later when it is more firm but can lift little sheets of panel with it? Any feedback would be appreciated.

i never heard of dma but cobalt is a must   -  but one drop goes a long way

remember those smoking hot mixes - easy to get with too much cobalt  haa

pulling the tape is learned not read.   pulled at the right time, very little edge

a cple goes, roger, and you will have it worked
