I’m shaping a new board, and wondered if the kind and knowledgeable folks on this board would like to weigh in on what fin might work best. Here is what I’m trying to do:
Size: 9’6" x 23" x 3.25". Diamond tail, single fin, flat bottom, rails will be somewhat sharp for the last 2 feet or so of the board. Nose might be slightly pulled in (not spoony). Hips fairly normal (not wide or pulled in). Blank is the USBlanks 9’9" Bruce Jones, normal rocker. Glassed heavy - 18 oz on deck, 12 oz on bottom.
Type of Wave: Sandbar/shorebreak, knee high to one foot overhead, sometimes clean but frequently choppy. Needs to paddle well as takeoff location isn’t always predictable. Usually somewhat meaty and mushy, only goes top to bottom when small (less than shoulder high). Sectiony; need both down-the-line speed and ability to turn.
Type of Rider: Experienced, reasonable skill but not young anymore. Overall, spends about 60% of time going down the line, 30% carving around, 10% noseriding.
Overall Objective: A user-friendly longboard that does it all in small - medium surf. Responsive but not squirrelly. Extra weight is OK because it helps with the chop.
Fin thoughts: ? (that’s why I’m posting). I’d like to stick to either Futures or FCS…this is for political reasons (my friend is a retailer of these).
Thanks!
