Hello all, Im not new with the glassing stuff however I want to know your opinions about these types of works with panels, etc.
In this case (pict found in internet), it is done as panels but looks like was done on the lamination (after the lam kicked) not over the hot coat. in a cheater coat may be then hot coated and carefully sanded? then finish coat?
Many ways to skin this cat. Two or three were mentioned in above posts by others. Myself and a few others started messing around with glitter in the early 90’s primarily in the lam and sometimes over painted blanks. It had been done before. I like the “77” method, but I personally have never used “77” under resin. Sounds like it would work though. One thing for sure; It always takes way more glitter than you would think.
In the late 60s early 70s I did a lot of those , I am sure there are other ways but this is what I did , you dont need any special equipment or spray guns etc , when the blank is ready to glass paint on a catalized coat of resin and simply shake on the glitter , it will stick to the resin and you can put on as much as you like , when the resin kicks you can shake off any surplus glitter . When doing the bottom of the board do the rails first deck side up making sure you have taped off and covered the deck then turn the board over the the glitter will stay stuck to the rails and then shake the glitter on the bottom , How do you turn it over with sticky resin on the blank ? we tapped a small nail into the stringer at each end and used it to support the blank as we turned it over , dont forget to remove the nails before glassing . If you dont want glitter on the stringer tape it off in fact tape off anything you dont want glitter on it gets everywhere . Glass as usual , the glitter weighs practicaly nothing but you may end up with a little more resin in the lam . because the glitter is under the cloth there are no problems sanding and polishing , we used automotive glitter at the time but it is now available from other suppliers , you can mix diff colour glitters to get a custom look but my fav was an all silver glitter board . Hope this helps Good luck.
