Building a goofy orientated 8 foot Asym for shoulder to head high rampy waves around Montauk. Been looking at boards like the Mactavish Carver or Rincon which feature single concave on the front 1/3, Then double concave down the middle to a V at the tail. Wondering if I skip the the single concave for more of a flat contour on the front 1/3 and blend that right into a double concave. Any insight here is greatly appreciated.
hello, you can have the single concave, just doesn’t need to be deep, it can be very subtle.
in my own opinion and personal preference a bit of a single concave is better then 100% flat.
it feels better when i am surfing, more atached to the wave.
i think it helps the board interact better with the wave.
anyhow its just my opinion maybe i am wrong and flat is good.
i am indeed a big fan of the round tail, full single concave surfboard, also i surf mostly powerfull beachbreaks so take your considerations.
cheers and good waves.
I don’t think there is an “optimal” bottom for an 8’ Asym. I think any combination on an Asym 8’ long is a bit of a crap shoot.
i never rode a proper assym board, i think there are topics on swaylocks with designs from the original assyms (the first ones many years ago)
in those topics its well explained that the assymetric has some tought behind its works.
its not just combining two templates and make a frankenstein board or is it?
I’m not going too crazy on the cut out on the heel side. Just enough to get more release cutting back. Other than that it’s symmetrical. I’ll probably mirror the Mctavish mid length contours and see what that yields. Thanks for the comments guys!
The Mctavish Poached asymmetrical is interesting in that it is designed to go both ways.
So you don’t set a board up like this with a concave on one side and a flat bottom on the other?
Thanks for attaching that video! Some great clues about where to go with this build. Looks like he’s doing single to double with some extra tail rocker on the heel side.
My brother has several assyms made by San Diego builders. The bottoms are so complex with one side slightly different from the other. Too bad those OGs who made those boards and used to post here are gone, they would have great input.
I like a very slight concave under the front third of my boards and a spiral vee or plain double concave in the tail. I like the way the spiral vee/double concave feels. On an assym I don’t don’t know what would be best because the outline is different on each side and the fin placement is not symmetrical.
I think assyms are better when they are shorter performance boards, but there’s a guy riding a midlength assym where I surf and he really likes it.
Thanks @sharkcountry I like the spiral v suggestion. The tail contours are a little tricky with the outline and rocker being different but earlier this year I cut down an old performance 9-1 longboard into a 7-8 wide nose sym and it’s actually when pretty well and retained enough rocker not to be a total nose diver. For the tail I just kind of eyeballed the blend. But this time I’d like a system that’s repeatable
