I’m currently finishing off a retro fishie that I’m going to use for smallish waves have some form to them. My next project will be a mid-length for the “other” type of small waves - the mushburgers. I’ve spent a lot of time on single fin eggs in the mid-lengths and I like the the way they turn and fit into the face of the lil’ softballs. For surfing these types of waves I’m not trying to generate speed so much as go with the flow and get some trim up and down the face. I tend to favor fairly flat rockers in the 6-6 to 6-10 ranges.
My question here is in asking what types of bottom contours would best suit this type of surfing on this type of wave? I’ve been using a fairly flat bottom contour with a very mild vee and more of a downrail configuration. I’m wondering if there’s a better combo out there for the conditions I’d be surfing this board? To be honest, I’m somewhat interested in the McCoy wide tail/loaded dome with a more upright pivoty fin setup and softer rails, albeit with a wider nose. Something with the wide point at center or just behind it. More like a pig than a pintail.
Anyone have any insight to offer, or is this just a dead end?
