So I ordered a kit off seabase and it came with a bunch of chems but no explanations as to their application. I have searched online for quite some time but I guess most people see it as something so basic it doesn’t merit explanation, however I am going to be “that guy”. I’ve shaped my board and the fin boxes are in, I just need to know which order I should mix these in for the lam coat, hot coat and gloss.
Epoxy Resin
Hardener
Catalyst
Paste Compound
Gloss
Addiditve F
And also, when should I sand and acetone my baby up?
Go to their website and across the top of the page click on "DOCS", all of the info you are looking for is there and more. I would answer them for you if I could...I have a limited experience with Epoxy. Good Luck on your build!
Its the weekend so I expect you want to get on with this. However from your questions I think you need to read some more, look at some youtube glassing vids and talk to seabase.
You should be able to match up the Epoxy and the hardener for it. Surely they should be labeled if only with the manufactureers name.? If not then there will be roughly half as much volume of hardener as Epoxy resin. Are you aware of how important it is to mix these in the correct ratio (preferably by weight but can be done with volume) ?
The catalyst will be in a small container and goes with the polyester Gloss resin.
Do you have the polishing compound offered as an extra for the kit? Is that what the paste compound is??
Did you get a good quality chemical respirator and clear vinyl gloves?? Use them also with the Epoxy even if you cannot smell anything.
5. Do not use acetone for clean up and never let contaminated acetone
touch the skin. Any toxicity problems we’ve seen in the past always
included contaminated acetone. Not only that but acetone doesn’t work
that well with epoxy anyway. Leaves everything sticky. For your hands
use disposable vinyl gloves
Sounds like you want to use the epoxy resin /hardener + add F for the laminating and the hotcoat / fill coat then finish with polyester gloss.
You need a clean space about 70 F or 22 C . Working with Epoxy and with Gloss resin is difficult otherwise.
Interested in what fin boxes you went for for under the glass. Was it the F3 ? Any good?
Hey Mark, thanks for your reply. Helps confirm what I was thinking and clear up some haziness I had about the catalyst and paste compound. And acetone’s a big no-no, thats been the general concensus for first time board builders.
I used future boxes although in hindsight I think the F3’s would have been the best choice but ah well.
