You can’t shape if you are always scratching. Just got back from a Thanksgiving with my estranged Wife and Daughters on the Central Coast of Oregon. The thing I won’t miss about Maui when I settle there in the spring is the “damned” Maui Mosquitoes. I am at home in Kihei now. Stepped outside for just a few moments at about 5:00 PM and have four crazy “itchin’” bites. Never saw a “mosco” the whole time I was up there in Oregon. I also worked on Her house for a few days and didn’t even sweat. I did however have several hitchhikers from Calif though. About forty hithhiking flys from Calif. made the trip to Pacific City/Beaver/Tillamook with me. Eventually they were released one at a time thru the window or flat-out swatted with the Tillamook “Headlight-Herald”(ie-dead via the classifieds). Saw some easy "double-overhead waves at Seaside on Sat the 29th. Bumpy, but saw at least one local take off on a right of probably 15 to 20’ at the Cove, behind the section. The photos from the Nelscott look as though they had a nice day for one of the most unique big wave events in probably the world. I am sure some of those Portland OSP guys will criticise me for even mentioning the above. Lowel
Sunday was bigger, cleaner, and, in Newport, sunny and 71… Nice last day of November… Ain’t exactly Lahaina though… Giving thanks for my “seal skin.”
Yeah - Never a mosquito this close.
Hate to burst your bubble, 'cause there is lots to like about the Pacific NW, but a total lack of mosquitos isn’t one of them. Come summer, there will be plenty.

Go to Hana if you want to see choke mosquitoes, the ones in Kihei ain’t nuthing! With global warming,a lot of places that did not have mosquitoes will or are getting them now,so places that did not have dengue or malaria are gonna be getting them, and in case you did not know,I hear mosquitoes are in the millions in Alaska in the summer, maybe the’ll go down south!.Personally, I wish a lot more people,a whole lot more people moved to the mainland, getting crowded here, and I hope they take their Stand up boards with them,Bon Voyage,Brah!!!
Kava---------Maybe you can see 'em out dare, but not here. If an and by the time you do see 'em, your a$$ has been bit multiple times. In Mex they call 'em “No See 'ms”. Compared to Alaska, the NW etc. the bite drives a guy nuts for up to an hour. I don’t SUP, but I’m not saying I won’t ever. So if and when I leave I won’t be taking my standup with me. I agree with you about the crowds. Considering how $#!tty and inconsistent the waves are here on Maui, crowds from Calif. and the East Coast just make it worse. I’ve got a ten year old daughter up there and if I leave it will be because she needs her old man. I can also sell “choke” boards up there compared to here. The Elua and Southpoint boards rule Maui. PS --My daughter got serious Dengue during the outbreak in '01-'02.
Sorry to hear about your daughter getting dengue.I got it once, took me 2 months to get over it.There is a bad outbreak of dengue back home in the South Pacific right now,French Polynesia and Cook Islands, deadly. We also have “no see’ums”,they drive you nuts, but at least don’t carry diseases, for now anyway.Good luck up north Brah
