Hahaha. 35-50 feet would wipe out Sydney. What would be the biggest weve ever had here anyway?? The only place in Australia that could hold that size that we know of is X-Box reef in W.A. That’s some big a$$ waves. 12-16 feet we only get surfable once a year! I’m just really glad im not there to be called a dog.

There may be some others, nicco. I heard about a session this year in Oz that was enormous and it wasn’t WA. In fact, I believe Kelly Slater was comparing it to Jaws (sizewise that is - no kidding). Unfortunately, some of the progressive neanderthals in that neck of the woods prevented any filming (once again, no kidding). They are worried about the masses coming into the area but everyone who knows anything about places capable of holding big waves knows where this place is. The other thing is there were only four tow in crews on this day when the swell peaked and only one was a local crew. The simple fact is there are very few who will take this on - not even the neanderthals.

I, for one, would have loved to see footage of perhaps Australia’s biggest day or seen how close it was to those enormous waves from WA. I’m sure there are many others that would feel the same, knowing that Kelly, Ross and T Ray were all out there.

Ok then,

Ill be quiet now! What state was this in though? Vic or Tas my guess, only other places to get swell. Thats pretty hectic, if its as big as jaws or has any resemblence I dont think thered be anyone in Australia with the skills or knowledge to tackle such a big wave spot. It understanable from the locals point of view though, with the recent “whoring” out of Cortes. I still however think its a shame that we dont get to see these things and give credit to the brave souls who ride them.

How did you manage to find this out??

Nicco.

I SECOND THAT !!! YEAH BABY !!!

its flat in florida this week but the gulf coast got some pretty good waves. i wish i was in hawaii right now. i dont think i would want to be out in the water. but i would love to sit on that cliff over lookin jaws.

Howzit J., Right now it’s huge and all the outer reefs are maxing, it started rising yesterday afternoon so here so it should be macking for you guys by now, we get it first but it’s never quite as big as what hit s Oahu. But as I look across the street I see white water everywhere to the horizon. I figure it’s to big for Pipe but why aren’t they running the Eddie today? Oops I guess they are running the Eddie today. Aloha,Kokua

Yep Da Eddie ran today. Woke up at 6 and it was already madness in front of my house. I was shocked to see traffic that early. Waves also washing onto the highway at Surf & Sea, Laniakea, Rockpiles.

Oh yeah it aint over yet…theres gonna be a BIGGER swell on Friday-Sat. Should be worth watching.

Kokua,

We just returned from a stay near Hale’iwa/Sharks Cove. It was getting jumbo out there when we left and I now hear that there’s water and sand in our living room rental. Guess we left at about the right time. I’ll post some photos when that’s operational again. -GH

Hey nicco,

your guess is correct - there’s not many states that cop swell like that. It seems to me that there are people in every country these days who will take on the big stuff. It amazes me what man has done in this regard. However, there just isn’t that many to overcrowd a place when it’s macking like that, particularly in Oz. I can understand locals wanting places kept secret - it’s natural, we all hate it when our local break gets overcrowded with tourists no matter where we live.

But, it’s a fact of life. You live near a good break that’s close to large population - it’s going to attract visitors. Of course, visitors should show respect to the locals. It helps get things off on the right foot when locals spot a strange face in the line up. However, what some guys do to dissuade visitors is crazy, particularly when so few will surf it.

The logical outcome of this type of behaviour is that those individuals should never venture outside their own area as they are then invading someone else’s local break, doesn’t matter where it is.

As for the North Shore at the moment - Bruce Irons has given an indication of just how versatile and amazing he is.
