Hey Hicksy,
it’s the Wedge at Newport (CA). An “artificial” wave of sorts with a drastic
bounce effect.
My buddy stand-up surfs the place in the summers, he uses a longboard.
I’ve seen him get absolutely clobbered!!!
Guys get so worked at the Wedge. It jacks into nearly dry sand… and it can get huge… way bigger than that vid. Not many guys stand-up surf there. Mostly bodysurfers and spongers. Millions of dollars in swim fins get lost there every year. When I was a kid I used to surf there once in awhile… when I wanted to get pitched into the beach and get a mouthful of sand. Dick Dale (Wipeout) has the primo pad there.
Here’s more footage:

LOL!! That’sa classic line … the endless summer …
the dirty ol’ wedge
“Dick Dale (Wipeout) has the primo pad there”
Dick Dale has no connection to the tune “Wipeout”. He didn’t write it,
and I’m pretty sure he’s never recorded a version, either.
Dick Dale played Miserlou…aka Pulp Fiction theme…aka “Pump It” BEP…
He only used one string on his electric guitar to play it…
I took a surfboard out at the Wedge. Once. The things you do when you are young, stupid, and looking for excitement…
Thanks for the vid links Kendall, just wasted 20mins holding my breath and going OOOOHHH a lot…
Those guys are insane…
I’m going to show my girls this, they got scared trying to get out past the beach break here last Sunday on their foamies and it was only 3’…
…

Dale, no. Practically everyone else, yes: http://tinyurl.com/2nlh8y

oops… alzhiemers. I should have just said Dick Dale the surf guitar guy. He used to keep his mobile home parked in front of his house at the Wedge. It had an airbrushed painting of a surf hippie with a Strat, sitting in an inner tube, with perfect waves breaking outside and palm trees framing it. I thought that was totally cool.
wow and I thought I was masochistic for going out @ Moss on NYE day … at least it LOOKED like I MIGHT have had a chance to succeed … those guys were quite playing against the odds
“those guys were quite playing against the odds”
My son broke his neck there last summer. He broke the C2 (same as Christpher Reeves) into 3 pcs. and had to have it screwed back together. Thankfully he’s fine.
When I lived in Newport around 1970+, we would go check out the Wedge when it was on and marvel at the talent and balls of the core bodysurfing crew…now it seems that spongers have squeezed the bodysurfers out - it’s all I see on Wedge vids…I find that sad…
Are there still hard core bodysurfers around Newport? Do they get any slack from the spongers? Or is it that they just don’t get filmed and are charging as always?
Note: I don’t dislike sponges…always have one in reserve for certain situations…my son learned the rhythms of the ocean on one…but I hate the thought that they’re depriving the real royalty of the Wedge their rightful spot…

Yes there are still plenty of bodysurfers. There is a blackball in effect there so that no flotation devices are allowed between 10 and 5 in the summer. It gets insanely crowded once the flag goes down and every boogie boarder from here to Riverside gets in the water. It’s a fun wave, but as aquafiend’s post highlights, a very dangerous wave. I have a friend who won’t go out there…me, I can’t wait till summer…
anyone have any links to bodysurfing footage from the wedge?
