OTHER RESINS?

The orginal question was about RESIN X, because surfysurfy has a post on that stuff–some claims of no blush, no bubbles, good flex, super-clear, no yellowing, no VOCs, works on PU or EPS

The stuff I saw and remembered as Resin X was Max Clr – the EBay store is under http://cgi.ebay.com/…tem#ebayphotohosting

But if anyone has used these, please speak up

sorry this thread was falsely titled and stayed up like that–the site went down for a good while this afternoon and evening

Are you sure? The surfysurfy blog claimed it wasn’t an epoxy…

According to the specs, its numbers are not as good as RR, but it’s price sure is…

JSS

Yeah, sorry about this thread sorta–I saw the surfysurfy post and thought they were talking about the Max Clr I had seen before, but no

Anyway, I still wonder if anyone had used any quality resin or epoxy besides the name brands we all know, as I myself have had a board develop weird yellowing places, when it was kept in a closet, after a pretty short time, and although it was Clark foam, I now figure the shaper used epoxy without telling me. I didn’t like the look. Cheaper would not suck either.

Resin-X sounds interesting now.

Our chemist friend Matt, pictured right, responded to a laundry list of qualities we want in surfboard resin.

Strong, easy to work with, no ovens for curing, affordable, high clarity, easy to sand, no VOC’s (so it qualifies as “environmental”), high performance flex and coolest of all, a resin that can be used on both EPS and polyurethane foam.

We have done a few boards with it and Resin-X is incredibly promising. In the next month I am getting EPS, polyurethane and wood boards shaped for me and I will be using Resin-X on all 3.

One resin to rule them all.

Freaking awesome. Throw an Ice-9 blank in there as well. The more surfboards you can R&D at Co. expense the better.

TFAD – you said Matt was responding to your laundry list of requirements. Does this mean that Moonlight hired Matt to create the resin for Moonlight alone, or is there some plan to market the resin (if all goes well)?

Also, when you say “strong” – has it been tested? Where do its flex and strength numbers fall?

Thanks for any info

TFAD, I also think people would be interested to know that it does not yellow and has a low exotherm.

NO, Moonlight did not hire me.

It kicks fast. We are all most done with a slower version. You can sand in 30 minutes to an hour.

Another thing people should know is that Marlin won’t let his quad that he glassed with it to leave his hot little hands. He is so stoked on it and how it performs, the strength the flex and the weight. I’ve begged him a few times to let me ride it but he just can’t seem to part with it. I was hoping we would get a demo at the shop soon. If Marlin’s reaction is any indicator the stuff is insane!

Can you go into any more detail about the product’s characteristics…?

Any idea how long until it will be made available to the public?

Yeah, Marlin is a field testing dream. He has worked at Moonlight for 18 years and done every job in a glass shop, has his own company 101 fins, shaped over 20,000 boards mostly for Channel Islands, and is a great surfer that can articulate what is going on underneath his feet. Marlin built the very first board out of resin-X and is still riding that same board four months later. The board in the picture is my board, Double winged California Quad, bamboo fins. If you are lucky enough to get Marlin to shape you board, jump on it because it is unlikely that you could find some one who has that much control over the entire concept.
