Hey guys…I’ve been out of the loop for a while…The last hollow wood I build was more than a year ago. Check it out below…
Anyway…When I was glassing the fish, I used Resin Research. I remember hearing about a couple of resins coming onto the market at that time (I think one of them was Resin X) that wear better (easier to polish to a shine ect.). Anything new out there? I’m getting ready to glass another board…I’m planning on using RR, but wanted to make sure nothing new and improved is on the market!
I remember seeing this board on the grainsurf forum. Truley a work of art. Is the new board a HWS too? Do you have pictures? Can’t help you out in regards to new types of resin…
When you mention resin research, are you planning to use epoxy not resin? I’ve done a couple of eps boards using Fiberglass Hawaii products (WWW.Fiberglasshawaii.com).
They have a two part epoxy that is pretty nice. The big caution is heat. If you use their epoxy with fcs fins with eps core, you MUST apply the resin in two or three sessions. I wrap the inside of the plug hole with 4 oz. cloth so all the applications will bond together. First apply just enough to fill the lower slots of the H. Second, set the plug and apply enough to contact the bottom of the plug, but not the sides. Third, fill the sides of the installation. Fiberglass Hawaii sells disposable cheap medical syringes that are good for injecting in the epoxy. Their epoxy as acetone or alcohol clean up.
The Fiberglass Hawaii epoxy is very good; as good as RR in my opinion. They also have a thinning additive for it. I’ve interchanged resin and hardeners between the two without any problems, same 1.0 : 0.45 ratio by weight. I will use either one at this point, the only difference to me is cost.
Thanks for all the replies! Looks like I’ll just stick with RR.
Here is a preview…Ol school Jerry Lopez look alike…7’4". Inlayed Lightning bolt. I’ll post some build pics and stuff after glassing. Just the rough sanding/shaping is complete. This is a SLOW project…just working on it when I have a minute.
