what do you guys use to cut out the outline? if it’s a hand saw…how many tpi for a fine cut?
Any hand saw will work fine. Just keep it straight, perpendicular to the bottom and saw a 1/4" outside the line to be on the safe side. Sureform down to the line. Good luck!>>> what do you guys use to cut out the outline? if it’s a hand saw…how many > tpi for a fine cut?
left handed circular saw can’t be beat. I just got a Ryobi cordless with a thin 5.5" blade. it’s super light, I can’t wait to try it out.

Handsaw and my planer…surform at nose and tail.On longboards I do most of the deck crown and foiling before cutting the board out,it makes it easier to clean up.This was hammered into my thick skull by Jim Phillips. On shortboards I can usually cut straight enough to just touch up with a surform and sanding block. R. B. A Stanly Shark Tooth short blade. A little WD40 to spray a little mist on both sides of the blade. Don’t need to spray much but what a difference in cutting. When cutting your saw arm should be out in front of you so you can look down the blade and under the saw blade to see the line. Another words a 45. Never saw up and down your blade will wonder on you but at a 45 and away from you the blade will stay lined up over your line. I push down with a forward stroke on the saw then up and out cutting the underside on the up stroke… Then clean up the nose and tail with surform up close to the 12 inch points. Now set your board on rail in the racks and square the bottom. Jam some foamrubber between the blank and the rack to keep your board from moving. and use your planer and with it closed to just a little open begin cleaning up your cut lines. Then a little sanding block from nose to tail. I learn something a long time ago never sand little areas trying to even out bumps Nose to tail full passes a few passes and everything should be Square… When i teach someone how to shape the cut out is always a treat i make them cut it to within a 1/8 of inch. Remember when cutting out keep it Square… Rob
