Hey all, I’ve been thinking about getting a larger shape for a while, like an egg for example.
I’ve got the chance to buy a cheap 6’ Hypto style board now, i reckon it would be at least 36 litres, really wide and fat too. (I’m 66 kg and usually ride around 24L).
Do you reckon this would be ok? Have you got any experience riding oversized boards such as this? Or do you reckon a retro design would suit better?
Strange, I added a comment on this but it’s gone. Maybe didn’t submit right.
Been there, done that. And in fact, with the exact same board and dimensions. I was 77kg,liking 35litres at the time and went with the 6’.
Itnwas ‘meh’. Finally understood the meaning of corky. The board skipped across the surface without engaging the face properly. Particularly bad for bottom turns - I’d either over or under turn, it was frustrating. Sold it, at the time unsure what all this fuss about the HK was. Then I tried a 5’4. Although it was too small (really 5’6bor 5’8 is better) it felt a lot better once I get up.
Had a similar experience with a baked potato which I hired to try to learn from.
Don’t oversize a groveller anyway. The rails are designed to be in a certain position in the water, especially slightly fat ones like a HK.
Get a proper egg.

I weigh the same as you, if the volume is in the right places a high volume board can be awesome. i just sold my 5’4" with 32 ltrs and it was epic but i have made a 5’0" with around the same volume and its rad too?
36 may be a touch to much.
