Paddleout for Mike Wasch this Sunday- 38th Ave

PADDLE-OUT REMINDER: A paddle-out for the late Master glasser/fiberglass artisan Mike Wasch, who died of a brain tumor in February, will be at 10 a.m. July 15 (Mike’s Birthday). People should gather at the Dirt Farm by O’Neill’s house- 38th Ave, Pleasure Point, Eastside Santa Cruz- parking will be tight so early will be smart. After the paddle-out, there will be a party and barbecue at the Haut Shop (Swift Street Westside Santa Cruz)for everyone to get together and remember Mike. There will be three bands, BBQ and drink.

Watching Mike glass was like watching ballet- he was so good!

My exact words “Oh my gosh!” I am so blown away and shocked. I didn’t really know him personally, but having owned a few Hauts in my years in SC I can only say he was considered a “Legend” in Surf City and the surfing world in genereal. His reputation as “the” Master Glasser of Monterey Bay was widely known. The last time I was in Hauts (about two years ago) I asked Susie Haut if Wasch was still glassing for them. She said he told them he was doing “fourty to life”. There was once a newspaper article about him in the SC Sentinel about how he fiberglassed the broken bill of a pelican. Very saddened by this news. Anyone else got a story in tribute to a great guy and Master Glasser. Wish I could be on the mainland for the tribute. Lowel PS Ask Andrenni about this guy. He’ll bear witnesss.

Top! Come by!

Mike was not only a good glasser he was one of the top glasser in the state bar none, Mike could do it all lam, hotcoat, sand and polish, he ran the back room for Doug and Suzie, in fact not long after Mike left the Haut shop Doug least out the glassing area, Doug could not shape boards and run the glass shop at the same time. We all miss Mike… It was nice to see Jonny and Rosemary Rice in the water again, and as always it was nice to talk to you Steiny.

a really beautiful and touching paddleout, it had to be the nicest day of the year- people just sat out there in the water off the drainpipe and visited for so long after the spreading of mike’s ashes. the party/remembrance at the haut shop was amazing- so many old friends, great shapers, and santa cruz legends in attendance, it was an honor to participate- the hauts went all out, the food was great- tony mikus’ wife sang a beautiful song she wrote for mike and there were a lot of old guys crying. mike was a well loved guy.

as always its really nice to see you too al.
