Paint and clear coat compatibility

G-D-it! I am so close to being done with my first board, but am having “issues” with paint on the hotcoat before I gloss. I’m just trying to put a simple yellow paint pinline on the hotcoat with a thin black outline on each side of the pinline. First I tried acrylic paint (liquitex), but didn’t like the thickness of the paint and brush marks that I couldn’t seem to get rid of. Plus, a test of the gloss resin over the paint made the yellow paint run (not the black line, though). Then I tried a paint pen which made a better looking yellow pinline and since my black paint pin ran out of paint, I tried using a black Sharpie permanent marker to finish the black outline. Then I test coated a small area with an enamel clear coat and that made the black line run, but not the yellow paint. So, I guess either the Sharpie or the enamel clearcoat was a bad idea. Any thoughts besides sanding the whole thing off? Are regular Sharpies a no-no? I couldn’t find Posca pens or Sharpie acrylic paint pens at the local art supply stores.

thanks,

Jim

You may find that doing resin pins are easier since they don’t need an overcoat. To do the acrylic type, mask the yellow first and do the black last. I recommend using an airbrush since this minimizes bleeding under the tape. I use the 3M automotive pin striping tapes for this. Spray over the finished lines with clear acrylic in a can then glosscoat.
