Anyone have any problems when painting directly onto EPS foam after fine sanding the spackle down? I lay down one coat of the Tempra paint thinned with water, and then lay another down. After my third coat and the color I want the board, it begins to chip, once dry. In some spots, the paint doesnt stick to the spackle and you can see the fading and brush strokes of the paint.
Anyone have any problems with this?
Besides going to Poly blanks, what are some fixes for this?
If you look at the picture, you can kind of see what i am talking about. at the tail near the bottom, it looks like the paint is not sticking. And what you see is the second coat.
Yes. Even if you use flat interior house paint, you will be better served. I’ve had good luck painting spackled EPS… But; I thin my spackle and I spread it thin. Only filling the voids. I do not sand a spackled EPS blank. I screen it with worn out 220 screen. I paint it with Flat Acrylic. I only do Pastels and I usually add white. In the old days I used Tempere a few times because I couldn’t find a suitable red. Your problem in my opinion is that you did not allow enough drying time between coats. Therefore the top coat dried before the bottom coats got %100 dry. Lowel
There are some high quality tempra paints. Tempra has been used since the days of of ancient greeks. I do like the satin flat sheen of a tempra paint. However for the most part they are not the best for airbrushing surfboards
If you use them add some clear acrylic binder then add just just a little distilled water to get the proper viscosity.
