2 pack polyurathane, boats are painted with it all the time.
Thank you for the response Rikds
I was looking for some thing I can spray on the rails under the gloss coat
I was told to try water base acrylic or maybe laquer …I will do some tests.
what I am building is an eps core with wood veneer deck and bottom with the rails being foam. I spackled the rails as to fill in the roughness then resanded. then thinking as to keep yellowing to a minimum I applied white tempra to the rails. when it dried I got a beige splotchy piss stain looking rails so I sanded it and most went away. so I went ahead and glassed it and put on the sand coat but it aint right. I want to apply the color under the gloss coat. either a fog or solid, I have yet to decide which way to go.
any one else out there?
I attached a pic but dont know if it will be inserted
system 3 2pac is the best
but
krylon FUSION spray paint for plastic surfaces will work too…
I’ve used it over hot coats and over gloss coats to cover up messes too.you can also seal it with UV protected acrylic gloss but it doesn’t need to be.

thank you for responding. I will test with the fusion spray along with a few others. will share the out come. did you see the pic that I had attached? previously
Hey Ken,
Just shoot the rail color with water based paint, Delta, Applebarrel,Tempur etc, then just gloss over it, and polish out. Just watch out for the burnthru. Do it just like a poly board.
do you think an art supply store is my best search?
that stuff comes in spray cans … right?
I dont claim to be an expert, but I do all my boards (5) in epoxy, then I paint the Linear Polyurethane over it…reason being: The paint makes for a weak bond coat and I was afraid it would delam easily…lifting the gloss coat. Just my .02 cents.
OK
got some H2O paint. white primer
did a test piece with the paint and a pin line then epoxied over it
I didnot scuff the primer and it went on good
it did fish eye for a minute then flowed out nice
I think I will do a lite steel wool to the primer then pin line the board and go for it
Fingers crossed
This is my water based acrylic painted rail Epoxy SUP board. The paint was put over the fill coat then I put an extra glass layer over the paint
And a Epoxy test panel with acrylic paint and water based polyurethane gloss.
It is still wet so my fingers are crossed.
A few hints.
I have heard that acrylic gloss coats turn milky when wet on epoxy.I am going polyurethane gloss, my epoxy gloss over acrylic paint had lots of fish eyes.
Use a scotch-brite pad and light denatured wipe to prep for gloss.Less chance of contamination than steel wool or sand paper.
Good luck,
Ian
Thank you Lavarat for the info
all advice is taken into consideration
the deck is now pinlined and ready for gloss
I will gloss the deck tonight then flip tomarrow and pinline the bottom and gloss the next night
I’ve attached a couple of pics of the pinlined deck
fingers crossed
well I got her glossed on the deck
the h2o paint gives me the willies, it fisheyed big time but came around and leveled out mostly.
I went over the rails (after it did its best to level out ) with a fresh mix of epoxy and it seems to be taking hold
Heres some pics
i agree with resinhead
use a water based poster paint or tempera
i use fas paint and it works good
then do either your epoxy coat or a 2 pac clear over that
make sure the surface is preped for final gloss before you do any paint colour
wear disposable gloves and dont handle the board to much
dry with hairdryer if you in a hurry
then just put your gloss over the top
try not to overwork the resin or the 2pac where the colour is because it will release colour into the resin
yeah if you handle the board to much while doing the colour
you leave oil from your hands on the surface of the board
this will potentially cause fish eyes and you cant clean the board after its colored cuz the solvent will make the paint run
hey ian
ive had certain brands of acrylic paint make the epoxy fisheye
i believe its some sort of additive possibly
ive settled on fas tempera
Well I got the bottom gossed last night. got more fisheyes this time even though I covered the color with acrylic spray.
But I went over it with a second coat of gloss
I will have to sand the hi area’s first then polish
I have to have this done by mid next week so I can christen her in Hawaii the following weeks vacation
Now I need some polishing info:
what grits of paper do you’s guys recomend for polishing epoxy?
Please input asap
Thanks
Ken
thats what im saying
some acrylics make the epoxy fisheye
thats why i use fas tempera as it doesnt cause fisheye
i sand the board
wipe with alchyhol
then spray the colour without handling the board
then brush or spray the 2 pac gloss without working the the gloss over the colour to much or it releases colour
i wet sand the 2 pac
240
400
600
careful you dont cut through to the colour though
you can start at 400 if your paint went down flat
sometime you get brush strokes and i usually do a quick 180 or 240 first
Ouch
I know I goofed up and I havent been doubling up on additive F
Will it still polish out?
Should I even try?
Or just sand and recoat?
What is 2 Pac ?
Sure it will polish out. Just make sure you run through the grits, Don’t skip a grit. You need to run each pad a bit longer than poly. Epoxy is a lot softer than poly, and tend to swirl a bit easier. Watch out for gremlins, you know little rocks tha majically appear on the sanding disk and gouge the crap out of your previously beautiful surface.
I wet sand. I put on my jump suit, buckle up the GFI, put on the goggles and have at it… sling some slurry I say… but around here everyone say’s its a big no, no. But it really makes a shiny board.

hello resinhead
do you use a machine for wet and dry
is it air powered?
its the only step that i find time coinsuming enough to bug the shit out of me
kensurf
2pac polyurethane paint
its an alternative for gloss/sealcoat
but its pretty smelly
Well I’m done with this board. And fed up with it
It looks great but didnt polish out for crap. wound up with a few burn trough’s on the white rails
the tape for the gloss coat let go and realy made the rails look sad
ya definetly dont skip sanding steps, f n hardware store didnt have s&%t for paper
My hieghbor came down and drooled all over it but I’m a picky bassturd
Too many media’s to deal with on this board
I will take it to Hawaii next week and beat it on the reaf, Dam thing better surf good or I will !!!
Well here she is
