You mean colored hotcoats!
Can work, will be sanded splotchy to be covered by thick gloss coat.
Gotta use pigments, strong, and easy color like yellow. Looks like a surftech.
I mean paint with acrylic over the hotcoat and than gloss over it…
Some tips pls?!
romu. i take it you mean using clear acrylic paint instead of gloss resin. if so clear will save some weight and is fast and easy to apply. however gloss resin wih give you some extra dent resistance and be more scratch resistant
Acrylic paint is not strong, so can be scraped off in the waxing process or even when you lay your board down on the rocks.
Also, it’s sooo thin it won’t be even. If thicker, it’ll peel.
Plus, you have to sand the acrylic paint some to apply gloss coat, making some spots thinner and showing uneveness…ugly.

no, i think what he means is doing his artwork with colored acryllic paint over a sanded hotcoat, and then glossing on top of that to seal it all up…
the obvious advantage to doing it this way is that if you screw up your paint job, you can just sand it right off and try again. the down side is that it might bleed under the gloss resin (which would REALLY suck), or have an adverse effect on the bonding of the gloss.
If you mean painting over a hotcoat and then glossing to protect it: Greater graphics detail than painting on foam is possible. Easier than painting on foam. Better colors. Repairs will be harder since you’ll be sanding thru the gloss and paint as you try and blend new glass in. Summary - looks good when new, not so good later. If you don’t care about weight, use a layer of 4 oz. clear instead of just gloss to protect it. Repairs will be easier and the whole thing will be more durable.
what kind of resin i use to lam that 4oz over the paint in the hotcoat??sandable resin or lam resin??
Romey…
Using acrylic on the hot coat and glossing over is no problem. THOUGH…before you begin TEST ALL COLORS YOU PLAN ON USING in your design. Paint some small dabs on and then very lightly sand the paint with some 150 grit just to give the paint some tooth, and then gloss over your tests. Remember that when you gloss you only brush over it three times…anything more and you could strip some paint off or cause bleeding.
Scuffing the paint is very important. Also if you get the paint too thick that might cause some bleeding. But test to, see what can be accomplished.
Using Liquitex acrylic brand is a safe bet. i have had problems with some paint pens bleeding.
As for adding a layer of glass that is also an option. I think that you can get 2oz glass that would be even more appropriate. Lam it over with Lam resin, then hotcoat again and gloss.
