Paint pens on foam

Do I need to seal any artwork I do with paint pens directly on the foam?

Do the paint pens you find at craft stores work just as well as the posca pens?

any water based paints work.

acrylic pens work, just try not to put something too heavy on there or it wont have a strong bong to the foam.

don’t use sharpies though, they bleed

waterbase,No

well, I’m definately no expert, but probably I’m wrong.

really? what kind of problems have you experiences with them?

I don’t think any has run on me once it dries properly.

Use water base paint pens(acryllic). Probably some stuff on this in the archives. You can seal with clear acrylic spray paint although I would not because of the expectorant in the can might disolve the foam. I think Kokua uses the spray can to seal on foam and he knows his shit. Not too thick. Might seal it with a light coat of Future acrylic floor sealer. Do a test on a piece of foam first. Mike

Howzit Adam, The problem with using paint pens on foam is the pens won’t fill the air bubbles in the foam. Use a spray gun and that will give you a solid color. I only use paint pens on the sanded finish before glossing.Aloha,Kokua

Yeah. I did a few with my daughter right onto the foam using both EPS and PU. You don’t get that really nice look and the foam drinks up your paint really fast too. Best thing to do is like Kokua says. I’m actually heading down to my shop with my daughter and we’re going to do one together on a sanded finished board… I’ll try to get some pictures…

what I ment to say was if you use water base pens you wont have to seal it

but as Kokua said they dont cover foam very well

Howzit rooster, Adam doesn’t say which color/colors he is going to use. For me I don’t use any spray acrylic if it’s only 1 color, but for black and red I use a thinned out resin cheater coat ( don’t pull the tape) to seal and prevent crystallation. The only time I use spray is for back to back colors so I don’t pull any color when pulling the tape off a painted area.Aloha,Kokua

it’s a board for my daughter and she wants a rainbow on it. I was thinking airbrush would work best for that. Keep in mind I’ve only done 5 boards and with the exception of a poorly done 1984 eddie van halen paint job on number 2, I’m have not got into any coloring.

Baby Steps!!

thanks for all the help guys!!

amateur w/my .02 … I did this airspray on foam this past friday evening. Sears compressor, craft store acrylic paints and a bunch of 3M 233 tape. I used a light pass of clear acrylic rattlecan, but only one pass & just along the lines where I had to lay tape over existing paint. the black ‘pinlines’ are acrylic paint straight from the bottle with one of those small craft paint brushes into the taped off lines

Howzit Adam, Sounds like a good project, use tape to make an arc and spray so one side had the taped off but leave the other side open so it has a overspray effect. The other way is to tape each color and then pinline inbetween each color. either way it will look noce.Aloha,Kokua
