Hello swaylockers and poly/epoxy pros. I for now only make polyester boards using the normal tints pigments and acrylics for my art and colors and use screen printed logos on rice paper. I just checked out my brothers new Naish racing paddleboard which was sick. The logos and art were painted on with some type of paint that didn’t have a clear coat over them and I am curious as to what type of paint paddleboard companies use to do these logos and designs. Also I’ve read quite a bit of threads saying that pigments in epoxy finish/hotcoats are tough and cause problems but these boards are solid color finish coated not the cloth with a clear hotcoat. How are these guys able to do this if its problematic for epoxy? Thanks
Urethane paint, forms a chemical bond to the epoxy. Sometimes a urethane clear coat is used. High-build primer underneath. Nothing high tech, same as auto painting process. Standard finishing method for Asian imports.
The quality of the paint varies from board to board. Some seem like the old Earl Scheib Paint jobs any board any color for $49.95
So they are finished with a paint job and fine buffed not pigmented epoxy hotcoat? Interesting. Seems the same for paddles also. I fixed his carbon paddle once and the white on the paddle head was painted. At first I thought it was just pigmented and vacuum bagged but it was too thin of a layer to be resin.
