hi I need help hit another brick wall. I am using a EPS foam and spackling over top of it and was painting before laminationbut I have run into a couple small issues like air bubbles and resin coloring with the cloth and now I would like to paint on top of the laminating coat with a water based paint airbrushed on the epoxy. then hot coat over top of that to seal it.I know a lot of guys used car paint but I’m worried about price water based paint is better price. Help?
I am a acrylics artist who paints - as hobby, but the paints are affordable. You can possibly find it at Wal-Mart, Michael’s craft store and art stores. Hint: buy the no name brands, and price shop.
Go with acrylic paint.
sounds good thank you.painting the board sounds easier than said if you read most cans of paint so far from me I can’t tell if they are oil or acrylic besides label on the back. that says what u clean up with, even that is not very much information. I found a paint on line called Nova water base paints and my goal was to find the fluorescent paints and that’s what got me started on the water base kick.your regular paint stores do not sell any water based paint that bright because of a base color. they have only spray paints that bright but most are oil. I just don’t want any lamination issues.
Wicked Colors are a line of Acrylic paints made for the custom Car and Motorcycle Artist. They work great on Boards. Nova is an excellent Brand But you can only buy them on line. Please if o like this board and want to get a professional looking finish Do Not use no Name or Cheap Brands. How much have you spent on this board ? Now is not the time to cut corners. You can seal the Art work with a clear Acrylic
Make sure the clear coat you use is made for outdoor use. and has UV Protection in it
I think that painting onto an epoxy lam and then trying to hotcoat over it will result in lots of problems with the hotcoat. I would advise a test panel before you proceed on a whole surfboard.
Artz thank u. after lamination coat and maybe two more coats on that to make it completely smooth I was going to airbrush the paint then epoxy another coat over top of the paint which is UV is that okay? also you mentioned acrylic clear coat over top of paint maybe not a bad idea to take place of polishing?
If you paint on the lam then hot coat, and you hit the weave while sanding you will obviously hit the paint. This of course has never ever not even once happened to me. Just speculating.
all the best
Definitely test whatever you’re using. My apologies I thought you were painting over foam.
Fyi I did my painting before glassing on pu w zero issues. Not sure what is best on eps.
Greg. on the last couple boards that I did for friends I started out using research resin never had a color issue but had a lot of fish eye problems and wooden stick very well with the resin but now that I’m using racka EPOXI I see my double cloth lap of cloth bleed through the poxy clear coats and it’s actually a different color and I can see exactly my sis or cuts off the cloth very strange if that makes any sense so now I’m trying to eliminate color issues with the epoxy on top of pain and trying to now paint on top of epoxy.any idieas?
Armstrong7, there is a brilliant guy here posting under the name Atomized. He does color and expoxy and has been very generous with information about how to do it right. Search on his name and on a material called gesso. You will turn up a lot of “how to” info. Go back to RR epoxy. Made for surfboard building. And you are going to want to seal your colors after coloring on the foam. Atomized tells you how. Good luck.
I agree. I would recommend glassing over the artwork, even if just 2 oz., to avoid all that.
Take the board to the point that the next step would be gloss coat. do a final sanding then paint then use a clear coat. If you want to use an epoxy gloss do a test first. Some paints may bleed. There are rattle can Acrylic Paints Liqutex , Montana , Krink are some of the Brands that should do the job all are intended for outdoor use. They are not cheap
Fish eyes are the result of some contamination. How where you applying the color? mixing in the resin as tint? if you were airbrushing check your feed lines and compressor.
