Painting blanks

I’ve had a week off from the board, but hopefully this weekend I should manage to get some glassing done. I was going to paint the shaped blank with water based Acrylic - a light blue colour, all over. I am a bit concerned with two things: One,If its water based will the paint cause the foam to swell? (I wasn’t going to drown the thing with paint). Secondly will it interfere with the glass bonding to the foam too much? Laters Peaman

Experiment with a mixture of blue and white tint on some foam scraps until you get the color you want. I would think it’d be much stronger. Good Surfin’, Rich

No the paint won’t make the foam swell. You should not have to put a lot on if you can find Opaque acrylic paint (it is worth the extra cash to get something that is premixed, like Createx). That is the trick, if you put too much on, it will look great until you go to glass it. Too much paint will cause a crystalization effect over your painted areas. I’m not sure of the exact reason why, but I can tell you first hand that it sucks. Red can be a tricky color as well as some blues. Just don’t go over board. In my limited experience, and from what I have learned from others is that airbrushed boards are somewhat weaker than non. By this I mean that because the foam has absorbed your paint, when you go to laminate it the foam does not draw in as much resin and/or does not bond as well. Don’t get me wrong, it is not like your board is going to fall apart because it was airbrushed, but it is something to consider.

how does the board look peaman? when painting put a light coaton let it dry then come back it may look very light but the resin will bring out the colour more!! good luck
