Painting foam

So, for my second board this season,  I did a tinted bottom lamination. Then I sealed the fore deck with gesso and painted it with Montana Gold,  lime green paint. Also tested spray directly on foam.

Let it dry. Then I did clear 7oz+ 7oz deck patch + 4 oz  lamination.

The paint on foam smudged all over,  see area in middle of the board, the sealed and painted part smudged a little onto foam. But not onto rail.

The messy part  will be covered by a full deck pad, and I plan on trying a black pinline, so it will still look good.

Question:

Anyone know how to keep the paint from smudging? use a clear sealer?  Montana sells it. Or let it dry longer?  I let it dry 3 hrs. Can says 6-8 hrs for full dry.

Acrylic spray and let paint dry a couple days.

No gesso on blank.

We use a ton of the montana. A ton… Straight on the foam. Then glass. Board…paint… glass. No trouble.

I use a clearcoat to seal edges if I have to back tape. also to get the paint to dry faster use a cheap hairdryer. I buy them at goodwill for a couple of bucks cheap and drys paint fast.  Oh and you really do not need to gesso.

I don’t know why

I jus’ gotta ask…

Way, way back while two was the rule.

I did some air brush stuff ,quite minor.

Then I used acrylic paint.

As I returned I stuck to foam tints.

Recently I made some hand planes and air brushed with

tempra.

Mistake!

I’m my own glasser.

K?

Stupid questions with tempra

    Seal it with what.

Also tempra seems to fade quick.

Back to Acrylic, yeah???

Light coats. let dry between coats.let dry a while before glassing. painting is not something you can lean on the internet. looks like you just learned some stuff. paint a few more. glass a few more…

matwho, a quality tempra paint should last a very very long time. Geeks and Romants used tempra on their Boat and as well as for painting their murals. Whit the less expensive tempra you get a poor quality pigment and less in the way of UV inhibitors. tho is why they fade. You can look for tempra in powder foam and mix your own paint I have used ar clear acrylic along with distilled water to makea very good paint for airbrush work. Did one board along time ago. Seemed to hold up well.

Lime montana goldl causes fish eyes badly if it is applied onto an epoxy glass surface and then u try to gloss coat using epoxy…ive just done a test panel as I was wary of this. …result?..looks like an orange peel…test it first. …ive used the same paint directly on foam with no lam problems whatsoever. …in short…some Montana paints are surface dependent. …beware !!!

Acrylic is best.

Works great under the glass and on finished board.

Tempra is crap without acrylic added to it.

Tempra has no binders. That’s the stuff which helps it bond and stick to the foam.

Thought so…

I your debt Barry…

Why not?

Hi people,

Yes I’m in the steep learning curve. I realize I need to build 10 -20 more boards.  Shaping is good to go, glassing, tinting and painted blanks is complex.

Painting blank offers more artistic options, so looking to develop that skill.

Why no gesso?

I can seal blank with Montana primer, is this better than gesso?

Recently picked up some Posca pens too. But that’s another thread…

Montana is a very good product     , but if you use it on eps the propellents will eat into the foam .  If you spray  Montana  onto a glassed board , pinlines , and than try to put resin over the paint without prepping the surface the resin will fish eye very bady it does not want to adhere to the paint , this makes me think that when you spray a blank with Montana there will be some loss of adhesion when glassing the blank ,  how much and does it make a differance in the real world i dont know .
