painting on foam before glassing - issues

I lammed a board yesterday (PU/PE) that i had spray painted directly onto the blank,

during the laminating process the paint smudged slightly, and now i have blue smears in places that should be white.

tow questions.

1) it's not major, so i think i can fix it with some touch ups and pinlinines. Should i do this on the lam coat, or on the hot coat?

2) how can i prevent this in the future? the paint i was using was rattle can crap (guess that will teach me). Am i meant to spray a clear coat over any colour if painting the blank before glassing?

Thanks

To prevent it spray the artwork with matte clear acrylic spray prior to laminating.  Also when laminating do not over-work the resin with your squeegie and resist the urge to pour any squeegied off resin back on the board if you have any color that has gotten in it.

Pinline on the sanded hotcoat.

Make sure your not laying the paint on to thick.

And are you using water based spray paint?

Sometimes I paint a thin coat of resin over the paint before the lame to stop that from happening especially on black.

One thing I can think of (assuming you allowed enough time for the paint to dry), is when the squeegee scrapes the blank past the lap and picks up dried flakes of the spray paint and those flakes get deposited in the resin on the naked part of the blank.

You can deal with this in two ways:

  1. Use two or more squeegees – Depending on how many colors you have painted on, use one squeegee for each, and one for the white. This will deposit the colored flakes back onto the paint and you won’t notice any difference.

  2. If it’s just two colors, tuck the laps onto the naked blank first and then tuck the colored part. Don’t go back and touch up the white part unless you’ve cleaned the squeegee. Also, like Mako said, don’t use the resin in the bucket if its got color in it!

I learned this the hard way haha

I’ve also learned that every method of color/artwork has it’s drawbacks, so you just have to learn to deal with them through trial and error.

Hope this helps, and let me know if it doesn’t make any sense and I’ll be glad to explain more thoroughly!

I always lam and hotcoat with epoxy, never had any problems over paint.  Maybe epoxy is more forgiving when lamming over paint?

Rattle can crap.....Rattle can crap...rattle can crap....yep...rattle can crap.....

So.....Mr Agenda....when do you plan to become a real man and buy some real tools? ( air compressor / spray gun)

Or do you plan to just sail the seven seas your whole life.... Sounds like fun.

Several light coats works best for painting....go slow...wait for each coat to dry.....

Howzit pirate, If you have to use rattle can paint then use krylon's Fusion since it is made to use with plastic. Other than that use a qyality grade waterbased paint and thin it with a mix of 50/50 water and acrylic thinner or find out the brand that Herb S uses. Now when doing an over spray paint job you have to spray the deck with a nice but not thick layer of white so the over spray will have something to stick to and won't smear when you laminate the board. I rattle canned this one and it ended up streaking on me too. Funny thing is I love the effect it gave it..kinda cool faded drippy thing going on

I just use the cheap acrylic paints you can find in any art store or even WallyMart.  I apply it with foam rollers and foam brushes.  Works great for an ameture like me.

Lets see someone at sometime, somehow  applied some sort of paint  or other agent to a shaped blank.  He then  glassed said blank some some unknown quality resin  something went wrong and the results were not good Now he ask what went wrong ? With all that information I can only say do something else. Your results might maybe the same or not.

1. someone - me

2. sometime - day before glassing

3. somehow - sprayed out of a rattlecan

4. some sort of paint - cheap rattlecan paint

5. Unknown Resin - PU (it is the same PU that 90% of pro board builder's in sydney use FTR)

Maybe it was stupid to use rattle can paint, but if you actually read the post the info is all there.

Thanks for all the other helpful replies. Looks like a spray gun is next on the order books.
