Was just wondering what is the best paint to use in Oz (brands etc). I had a read in the archives and it seems water based acrylic is the best bet ? going for a brushed on look like Dick van straalen does http://hookupusurf.com/surfboards/dick-van-straalan/5-10-micro-mal.html
Hi Zac Waterbased acrylics from an art shop is just fine. Can also use cheaper ‘poster paints’ that kids use in schools. Mix your colour and add a splash of waterbased acrylic floor varnish - go for the satin finish stuff. This helps seal the paint and prevents it from moving when you laminate. A golden rule is not to put it on too thick - use the minimum you can get away with to get your required density of colour. Too much paint will cause problems in the lamination - dark colours may also crystalise when you lam so it’s worth doing a little patch test on some scrap foam and brushing it over with laminating resin to check if things are good. You must also make sure you leave plenty of time for the paint to dry as again if it’s got any water left in it you have problems round the corner. I generally leave my boards 24 hours after painting before laminating. You may get away with less in Aus as it’s a hell of a lot dryer and warmer over there than here in the UK. As a final precaution you can also spray your finished artwork over with a clear acrylic spray - rattle can from the autospares shop.
Cheers
