painting polyurethane blank?

Sorry in advance if this has been asked before.  I search swaylocks and the internet and didn’t see much.

I am reshaping a crappy board, and since it was so old it was really yellowed.  So as I’ve been shaping it, I’ve exposed patches of clean white foam.  Now my finished blank is a mottled yellow and white and really ugly.  I’m going to tint it, but I’d like to do something first to smooth out the coloring.  Ideally, i’d paint the whole blank with some kind of solid color, but what kind of paint can I use for this?   I read that acrylic can be fine, is this true?

Can I just find some acrylic spray paint and paint it a solid color?  Will the glass still bond to a fully painted board?  What’s the best thing to do here?

And, one more side question.  I have another board I’ve been fixing up, and I’m putting in a leash plug.  In the past, if I just need a quick tint and I’m out of actual resin tint, I shoot a couple squartis of normal (non-acrylic, no idea what it is) spray paint into the resin and it will tint it and dry hard and it seems to be fine.  However, I imagine this does mess with the integrity of the resin somewhat, so while I’m ok with doing this in a pinch for just normal repairs, I don’t really want to test how strong this is on a leash plug.  Has anyone else done this, and does the resin remain just as strng as long as it’s not overdone with the spray paint?  What about if I was to get some acrylic paint?

Thanks everyone!

You can paint foam with acrylic or tempera paints. Too thick and dark and you may get some crystalization under the lam. I wouldn’t put any kind of paint in resin. Mike

I don’t think you can get water based paints in a rattle-can.

Can you?

I think you can but the expellent might pock the foam a little. I don’t use rattle cans on foam. Certainly wouldn’t want any expellent on a board when doing epoxy. Fickle stuff at times… Mike

So, I’m getting that I can paint the whole blank and as long as i’m not too crazy with it the resin will adhere just fine even without touching any foam to ahdere to?  thanks!!

Huck- liquitex makes a rattle can water based acrylic. They aren’t cheap at about 10 bucks a can but work great on foam. I haven’t had any issues with them and haven’t heard of anyone else having issues.

Save up some Micheals craft stor coupons and get 40% off those cans of liquitex You could also hide the discoloration by doing an acid splash effect right on the Foam.  stick to a warm pallet earth tones and you might just come up with an eye poping work of art.

Did u see the other thread where noleash painted his blank with tempera using a foam brush - it looked great!
